Major Duties:
Qualifications: To qualify for this position, your resume must state sufficient experience and/or education, to perform the duties of the specific position for which you are applying. WAGE GRADE STATEMENT Candidates for this position will be evaluated under the Federal Wage System (FWS) Job Grading Standards. Applicants will be rated on the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the duties of the position. WG-08: Follows oral or written instructions and/or work orders; performing maintenance mechanic duties, including use and apply standard building techniques, practices, and codes, read and understand blueprints, sketches and schematics, read and understand work orders in order to complete assigned work, use and maintain pneumatic hand tools, use and maintain shop tools, drill press, band saw, table saw, etc., follow manufacturer's instructions for use of power tools, follow safety manuals on operation of tools and equipment, follow safety guidelines working with oils and lubricants while performing maintenance tasks, respond to frequent changes in instructions, with respect to the team, project and/or task, adhere to a schedule to perform preventive maintenance work and inspection and maintain complete records of work completed. Working Conditions: Work is performed both inside and outside. The work performed is frequently subject to sudden temperature changes when working on equipment such as walk-in freezer units; sometimes required to make repairs and installation in bad weather or in work areas that are noisy, dirty, dusty. The Maintenance Worker is subject to danger of falling when working from ladders and scaffolds. Grade 8 mechanics are occasionally subject to cuts, burns, electrical shocks, and respiratory ailments. Exposure to repeated or concentrated amount of refrigerant gases may cause toxic effects to eyes, skin, and internal organs. Physical Efforts: Maintenance Worker handles and carries tools, equipment and testing devices that seldom weigh over 50 pounds. Work is normally performed at sites where most of the equipment can be reached from the floor or from ladders. Occasionally, platforms and scaffolding are needed to reach part of the systems such as fans, electrical and water lines an duct work and required to stoop, stretch, bend, kneel, and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Operates a government owned vehicle and maintenance equipment in the performance of duties. Screen-out element(s): Ability to perform the work of a Maintenance Mechanic as described in the vacancy announcement, without more than normal supervision. Time In Grade Federal employees in the competitive service are also subject to the Time-In-Grade Requirements: Merit Promotion (status) candidates must have completed one year of service at the next lower grade level.
