Major Duties:

  • Install, repair, modify, and maintain a wide range of office furniture and equipment, including modular systems, using blueprints and specialized tools.
  • Performs construction, maintenance, and repair work on various building surfaces (brick, drywall, wood, etc.), including plumbing repairs and water removal.
  • Install/replace lighting, troubleshoot minor electrical issues, trace wiring, and install/remove cables, including removing abandoned ones.
  • HVAC systems by replacing filters, clearing clogs, cleaning diffusers, and repairing insulation; replaces ceiling tiles and installs hanging equipment.
  • Procure, store, and maintain materials/tools, ensuring proper handling of hazardous materials; perform seasonal gardening tasks like cutting, pruning, and painting.

Qualifications: Applicants will be rated in accordance with the Office of Personnel Management Qualification Standard for Trades and Labor Occupations. Although a specific length of time and experience is not required, you must meet any screen-out element listed, and show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties at the level for which you are applying. Emphasis is placed on how you gained the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time, and the required ability or potential to perform the job. Applicants who do not meet the screen-out element (SOE) will be eliminated from further competition. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Physical Effort Work involves periods of standing, climbing, bending, stooping, walking, and working in tiring and uncomfortable positions. May require the use of ladders, scaffolds, and/or platforms to perform work on hard-to-reach parts or locations. Workers may lift and move materials up to 40 pounds, unassisted, and occasionally lift or move heavier bulky, awkward, or otherwise hard to handle items with the assistance of lifting devices or other workers. Working Conditions Normally the incumbent works inside and occasionally outside. Outside proper clothing can protect against exposure to heat and cold. Inside work is usually in buildings, adequately heated, lighted, and ventilated. Noise from hammers, saws, and other power shop tools, machinery, or equipment, will require the incumbent to wear approved hearing protective devices and conducting audiometric testing as necessary. There is dust and sometimes dirt, when assembling, disassembling, repairing furniture and operating power equipment. Injuries may occur in lifting heavy pieces of furniture or equipment; Incumbent is frequently exposed to the possibility of cuts, scrapes, and bruises when using hand tools and equipment; and more serious injuries in operating power tools. Incumbent is required to wear safety clothing and equipment appropriate for the job and work where assigned, Types of protective clothing and equipment include, but are not limited to the following: eye, respiratory, foot protection, and protective clothing such as gloves, apron, and coveralls. Types may be required as deemed necessary by authorized management officials.
