Position Summary
The Manufacturing Technician Apprentice is an entry-level developmental role designed to build technical skills in industrial manufacturing within Amcor’s production environment. Through structured onthejob training and formal classroom education provided in partnership with MACNY under the New York State Apprenticeship Program, the apprentice will learn the core competencies of the Industrial Manufacturing Technician occupation.
The apprentice will rotate through key technical areas—including Mold Technician, Automation Technician, and Equipment Maintenance—to gain a comprehensive understanding of manufacturing processes, equipment setup, troubleshooting, quality standards, safety protocols, and preventive maintenance.
Continuous learning is a requirement of this role, and participation in all MACNY apprenticeship coursework is mandatory for program completion.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
On-the-Job Learning
Assist and learn from skilled team members (Mold Technicians, Automation Technicians, and Maintenance Technicians) in daily tasks.
Develop proficiency in machine setup, mold changes, adjustments, and troubleshooting.
Participate in diagnosing mechanical, pneumatic, hydraulic, and automation system issues.
Support equipment inspections, preventive maintenance, and basic repairs.
Observe and follow standard operating procedures (SOPs) for manufacturing, quality, and safety.
Learn to operate production equipment and support root cause analysis for downtime or quality concerns.
Engage in continuous improvement initiatives, including 5S, waste reduction, and process optimization.
Technical Skill Development
Build foundational knowledge in industrial manufacturing technologies such as:
Thermoforming and molding processes
Automation systems and robotics
Machine sensors, actuators, and control systems
Mechanical and electrical troubleshooting
Maintenance documentation and CMMS use
Develop competencies aligned with the NYS Industrial Manufacturing Technician Apprenticeship standards.
Safety & Compliance
Follow all Amcor safety requirements and actively participate in safety programs.
Learn and apply Lockout/Tagout (LOTO), machine guarding, and hazard recognition.
Maintain a clean and organized workspace consistent with 5S and Amcor Safety Culture standards.
Educational Requirements
Attend and successfully complete all related instruction as required by MACNY’s NY State Apprenticeship Program, including:
Scheduled coursework
Testing and skill evaluations
Required study hours
Maintain good academic standing and meet all NYS program requirements for progression.
Documentation, Compliance & Safety
Complete accurate maintenance logs, inspection reports, and work orders in the CMMS.
Follow all Amcor safety procedures, including Lockout/Tagout (LOTO), proper PPE use, and machine guarding requirements.
Support compliance with ISO, quality, environmental, and safety standards.
Maintain clean, organized, and safe workspaces.
Collaboration & Continuous Improvement
Communicate equipment and facility issues promptly to senior technicians and supervisors.
Work cooperatively with production teams to address equipment concerns.
Support continuous improvement programs including 5S, lean manufacturing, and process enhancement initiatives.
Engage in skill-building, crosstraining, and professional development as directed.
Qualifications
Willingness to participate in a multi-year apprenticeship program
Strong mechanical interest and aptitude
Ability to follow instructions, learn new skills, and work in a team environment
Commitment to full participation in all classroom and onthejob training components
Basic computer skills for training, documentation, and communication
Education & Experience
High school diploma or GED
Preferred (but not required)
Prior exposure to manufacturing, trade work, or technical coursework
Experience with hand tools, equipment operation, or technical problem-solving
Interest in long-term career growth in industrial manufacturing, maintenance, or automation.
Competencies Developed Through the Apprenticeship
By the completion of the apprenticeship, the Manufacturing Technician Apprentice will be able to:
Perform mold setup, machine adjustments, and basic mechanical repairs
Troubleshoot routine production and automation issues
Conduct safety inspections and support quality checks
Interpret technical documentation (schematics, SOPs, blueprints)
Communicate issues effectively with maintenance, engineering, and production teams
Demonstrate proficiency in all NY State Industrial Manufacturing Technician competency areas
Support continuous improvement, equipment reliability, and operational excellence at Amcor
Program Details
Length: As defined by the NY State Apprenticeship Program (typically 18–24 months)
Structure: Combination of supervised onthejob training and classroom instruction
Credentials Earned: NYS Registered Apprenticeship Completion Certificate
Advancement Opportunities: May include Mold Technician, Automation Technician, Maintenance Technician, or other skilled roles within Amcor
Physical Requirements
Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. and perform tasks involving standing, walking, bending, climbing, reaching, or kneeling.
Work in environments that may involve heat, cold, noise, heights, or confined spaces.
Other Requirements
Strong attention to detail and ability to recognize early signs of equipment or building deterioration.
Reliability, punctuality, and adherence to established procedures.
Ability to work independently with guidance and as part of a team.
Willingness to work overtime or offshift as required to support production and maintenance needs.
