Job Summary: The Tibor Rubin VA Medical Center is recruiting for one (1) Maintenance Supervisor in the Engineering Service. This supervisor is accountable for two separate occupational trades (Machinist and Industrial Equipment Mechanics with welding skills) at the journeyman level. The Supervisor follows standard procedures and established policies to assure efficient and economical accomplishments of work is done. Major Duties:

  • The incumbent has a leadership role in providing management, guidance, and coordination for the repair, maintenance and oversight of Industrial Equipment Mechanic Unit assigned projects. Has full supervisory authority over permanent, contract and staff assigned to the Industrial Equipment Mechanic Unit. Works collaboratively with other facility departments to manage the repair, maintenance or replacement of any mechanical system required to support VHALBHS clinical and administrative operations. Duties include but are not limited to: Carpentry (20%) The journeyman level carpentry skills required as a maintenance mechanic will include sheet rocking, installing metal grids, suspended ceilings, installation of plaster lath, replacement of built-up and shingle roofing, installation of metal/wood windows, doors and frames, floor and ceiling tile, and repair wood flooring. Mechanic must be able to install carpet, cove base, seamless flooring, pour concrete slabs and sidewalks, etc. Journeyman skills will also require building wood equipment and cabinetry. Plumbing (10%) The mechanic will be required to work on the basic components of the hospital plumbing system, repair faucets, sinks, commodes, sewer and water lines, and valves. Plaster/Painting (10%) The mechanic will be required to perform new wall taping and mudding, sheetrock repairs, and plaster/tile repairs. Maintain Tools and Equipment (50%) Painting and priming surfaces on new construction and maintain areas during routine inspections. Knowledge (10%) Skill and ability to carry out special assignments, as delegated, and perform any other related duties that may be assigned. Work Schedule: Monday - Friday / 7:00AM - 3:30PM Position Description Title/PD#: Maintenance Mechanic Supervisor (Operations Group Foreman)/PD14306O Physical Requirements: Incumbent must have the ability to work from ladders, platforms, and scaffolding in overhead positions that will require working at arm's length or in stretched, cramped, or other such awkward positions. May also work at benches, at upright equipment or while material is being supported, requiring considerable bending, stooping, or prolonged standing. Occasionally, incumbent may be required to lift and carry items that weigh up to fifty (50) pounds. When necessary, incumbent will need to wear a self-contained breathing apparatus. Working Conditions: The incumbent works around potentially hazardous mechanical and electrical equipment, steam systems and compressed gases. He/she must exercise caution while with and around drill presses, lathes, acetylene torches, arc welders, hydraulic presses, milling machines, pipe threaders, power sewer machines, pressure washers, band saws and other shop equipment and tools. He/she may be exposed to high humidity and temperatures for extended periods. He/she could work in confined spaces and in cramped positions during repair and maintenance of medical center equipment and utility systems.

Employee will be required to work off of high ladders, scaffolds as occasionally necessary, as well as occasional heavy lifting and strenuous exertion. The employee is standing or walking most of the time and must be in very good overall physical condition. The incumbent will be fit tested for a respirator and is required to wear respiratory protection when working in contaminated areas, including asbestos-contaminated areas.
