Job Summary: This position is located in the House Office Buildings, Asst. Superintendent Facility Operations Division, Mechanical Systems Branch, Mechanical Systems Section. The incumbent assists the supervisor by leading subordinate staff including Air Conditioning Equipment Mechanics, Pipefitters, and Maintenance Workers and Helpers.

Major Duties:

  • The tour of duty hours will be 2:00 p.m. - 10:30 p.m. This position is emergency essential - Depending on the type of emergency the employee may be required to report to work during emergency situations. Duties include, but are not limited to: Assist the supervisor by passing on instructions explaining the immediate tasks to be performed by individual members of the group led. Check work while in progress and when finished to see whether the supervisor’s instructions on work sequence, procedures, methods, and deadlines have been followed. Advise other workers to follow instructions received from supervisors, and to meet the deadlines. Lead Maintenance Mechanics Workers and Helpers who assist higher level skilled trades workers such as Air Conditioning Equipment Mechanics, and Pipefitters in carrying out a preventive maintenance program in the House of Buildings. Lead Maintenance Mechanic Workers and Helpers as they perform a variety of visual and mechanical checks, repair leaks to equipment, replace burned-out lamps, repair loose electrical connections, clean and seal defective pipes and drains, measure and cut pipe length, and report more serious problems to the supervisor. Resolve work-related problems and referring informal grievances and appeals to the supervisor or an appropriate management official. Install, modify, and repair systems by locating and tapping main lines, set up system routes, place and cut route openings, place hangers for proper level and slope. Test Building Automation Controls (BAS) systems that require a knowledge of electronics. Assemble, install, maintain, and repair pipes, fittings and fixtures of the air conditioning and heating systems, plumbing, and water lines and fixtures. Repair obstructions in piping and convectors to obtain circulation and flow. Performs other related duties as assigned.

You must meet the following SCREEN-OUT(S) required for this position: The ability to supervise a diverse workforce of skilled workers in mechanical trade occupations specifically, overseeing operations, maintenance and repair of mechanical, plumbing, utility, HVAC, hydronic heating, steam generating equipment and building automation systems.
