Job Summary: The position is part of the Equipment Repair Shop under the Maintenance & Repair Section of Facilities Management Service (FMS), located at the Lyons Campus of the VA New Jersey Health Care System (VA NJHCS).

Major Duties:

  • Duties include but may not be limited to the following: The main duties of the position involve the maintenance and repair of two major utility systems: the Emergency Power System and the Medical Gas System. The Emergency Power System·s includes, but is not limited to, 13 CaterpiUar and 1 Kohler emergency generators, ranging from 100KW to 2MW, 54 automatic and Manual transfer switches ranging from 208 VAC to 4160 VAC, 13 Veeder-Root UST monitors, and all components related to the Emergency Power System. The Medical Gas System consists of a centralized Bulk Oxygen Tank, piping and regulators, isolation valves and 220 point of use outlets. The Medical Gas System is also comprised of various individual medical air and vacuum systems located in patient occupied buildings. Secondary work_assignments involve repairs and maintenance for a wide variety of mechanical, hydraulic, electrical and pneumatic equipment. Work may include, but is not limited to: maintenance and adjustment of automatic doors surface mounting of any item (i.e. handrails, fans, shelving, furniture, exercise equipment) to walls/floors/ceilings by being glued, fastened, screwed, bolted or by any acceptable means of attachment assembly/disassembly/repair/adjustment/alteration/installation/fabrication in order to maintain beds, stretchers, furniture, desks, chairs, fences, ventilation systems, AC ducting systems, wheelchairs, metal doors, metal trolleys, carts, grab bars, food carts, filing cabinets, lifts, washing machines, dryers, metal lockers, cage partitions, wall partitions, guardrails, kitchen equipment, machines primarily used in housekeeping, shop equipment both fixed and portable, and other miscellaneous items basic welding and cutting, working with metal, plastic and other non-wood products by measuring, cutting, drilling, fitting, troubleshooting and correcting malfunctions. Repair of electric motors, block heaters, and other small items to be used as spares. Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: The duties of this position require considerable movement around the hospital and involve bending, lifting, crawling through restrictive areas, and working from ladders, scaffolding, and platforms both in- and outside buildings. The Maintenance Mechanic must frequently lift objects weighing up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift equipment or materials weighing 50 pounds or more with proper equipment. Assignments may require standing, stooping, kneeling, climbing, and working in tiring and uncomfortable positions.
