Waste Connections of Canada is looking for an experienced Fleet Maintenance Manager for our Kingston, ON, District. We are looking for an innovative, creative and proactive individual capable of creating change and driving results. The Maintenance Manager is responsible for maintaining Waste Connections of Canada vehicles so they are safe and have minimal downtime (all vehicles on the road each day, except for those requiring major repairs). The manager develops and runs a preventative maintenance program to minimize disabled vehicles, major repairs and to prolong vehicle life.


Located in Kingston, ON, the shop has around 30 trucks from all LOBs. The team consists of 3 mechanics and 2 welders. The shop currently runs 2 shifts from Monday to Friday.

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Establish an annual budget within Waste Connections' guidelines (e.g., cost/hour based on the age of the vehicle).
  • Conduct safety meetings and ensure safe procedures are followed.
  • Recommend capital expenditures; develop a business case for replacement vehicles, equipment or tools.
  • Monitor and spend within allocated budgets, e.g., tires, parts, repairs and outsourced maintenance (for electrical and advanced diagnostics).
  • Schedule work assignments, shifts, PMs, backlog, and repairs (typically assigned through the supervisor).
  • Monitor labour costs and parts usage by type of repair to achieve appropriate labour costs (standard repair times) and parts usage.
  • Develop a Preventive Maintenance (PM) schedule for the supervisor to assign to mechanics.
  • Conduct periodic checks to ensure PMs are up to date and trucks are safe, minimizing roadside breakdowns and MTO issues.
  • Prepare a business case for modifications that are good investments, or for safety.
  • Maintain parts ordering system and inventory replenishment (e.g. adequate supply without shortages).
  • Purchase parts and materials; source the desired quality at the best price.
  • Maintain WSIB forms,
  • Periodically audit safety programs and inspect facility (e.g., lockouts, exit lights, extinguishers).
  • Hire mechanics and welders who can diagnose issues accurately, produce quality work, and establish expectations of shop employees.
  • Coach team to work effectively on company-owned vehicles, perform high-quality repairs and respond to driver VCRs.
  • Conduct discipline, handle grievances, etc.

 

What We Need From You:

  • 3 years’ experience as maintenance manager (with responsibility for developing and maintaining a preventative maintenance and asset replacement program) in a related industry.
  • Knowledge of heavy-duty trucks is essential.
  • Heavy Duty Truck Mechanic license is an asset.
  • Knowledge of the waste management industry is helpful.
  • 5 years of previous work experience in relevant trades (e.g., mechanic, welder) is an asset.
  • Familiarity with container shops and welding is an asset.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively, read, estimate, calculate, interpret, measure and document in writing, including a high comfort level with computers and technology.
  • Excellent interpersonal and managerial skills.
