About the Opportunity
We’re seeking an experienced Mainframe Technical Support Specialist to play a critical operational role in supporting VicRoads’ modernised mainframe platform, rehosted on AWS using Innowake technology. This role sits at the heart of systems that underpin essential licensing and registration services across Victoria, including the Driver Licensing System (DLS) and Vehicle Registration and Identification System (VRIS).
As part of a 24x7 Level 2/3 support function, you’ll be responsible for maintaining the stability, performance and resilience of a complex, cloud‑integrated mainframe environment. You will support batch processing, CICS, middleware, interfaces, and Tomcat‑based applications, working across mainframe, AWS infrastructure, databases, and modern application stacks. Operating in line with ITIL practices, you’ll manage incidents, problems, service requests and major incidents, contributing to root cause analysis and the implementation of long‑term fixes.
You’ll collaborate closely with cloud engineers, DevOps teams, DBAs, vendors, as well as internal Registration & Licensing operational teams. Beyond day‑to‑day support, you’ll play an active role in performance monitoring, capacity planning, security reviews, and continuous improvement initiatives—helping to uplift platform stability, enhance resiliency, and support VicRoads’ broader strategy of application simplification and modernisation.
This is a hands‑on, technically deep opportunity for someone who thrives in complex environments, values high‑quality customer service, and wants to contribute to mission‑critical systems that deliver real outcomes for the Victorian community.
About you
You’re an experienced technical support professional with 5+ years’ experience who thrives in complex, mission‑critical environments and takes pride in keeping essential services running smoothly.
This role requires the ability to obtain and maintain a Baseline Security Clearance. As such, Australian citizenship is mandatory.
What you’ll bring:
Proven experience managing incidents, problems, changes, releases and service requests in large, complex IT environments, aligned to ITIL practices
Strong technical breadth across hardware, software, databases and cloud‑based platforms, with deep troubleshooting capability across multi‑tier systems
SME‑level experience supporting modernised mainframe environments, ideally hosted on AWS
Hands‑on expertise with:
COBOL, Java, JCL, CICS, Linux and IBM MQ
Innowake / Micro Focus runtime environments, including Procedural Java generated by Innowake
Mainframe batch scheduling, preferably using Control‑M
Demonstrated experience supporting on‑premises, SaaS and cloud‑integrated environments
A proactive, self‑starting approach with a consulting mindset and strong problem‑solving skills
Excellent collaboration, communication and stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to explain complex technical issues in clear, non‑technical terms
Desirable experience includes:
Innowake enterprise server migrations
CI/CD tooling and practices (Git, Azure DevOps)
Linux system administration and Apache Tomcat operations/support
Cloud‑native monitoring, automation and operational practices
Lifecycle management experience covering security, resilience, risk, compliance and access controls
Agile delivery experience, including Jira, Confluence and Scrum practices
Strong stakeholder and vendor management capability, including financial and contract management exposure
