Job Description:
The Machine Shop Leader is responsible for the general supervision, direction, and coordination of a three-shift machine shop operation to meet production schedules while achieving quality and cost objectives. This highly motivated individual demonstrates initiative and drives strong performance in safety, cost, quality, delivery, and customer satisfaction. The role carries full accountability for departmental results—including cost control, work methods, and personnel management—and leads continuous improvement efforts across the department.
Key Responsibilities
- Analyze forecasts and coordinate production schedules to meet delivery requirements; monitor work progress and provide instruction and support to team members.
- Optimize manpower allocation to minimize overtime, reduce costs, and prepare for emergencies; recommend workforce changes in response to operational demands.
- Partner with supervisors to identify and address unusual operating conditions requiring attention or cross-functional coordination.
- Maintain close communication with other departments to ensure efficient material flow and on-time completion of orders.
- Maintain both quality and quantity of production output; assist personnel to ensure proper workflow and adherence to operational standards.
- Review costs and work methods; take action or recommend improvements to increase efficiency and reduce operating expenses.
- Coordinate workflow between operations and departments to support production continuity.
- Identify obstacles that hinder performance and lead teams in root-cause analysis and implementation of sustainable corrective actions.
- Develop strategies and plans to support long-term business growth and operational capability.
- Champion Lean manufacturing and continuous improvement initiatives throughout the machine shop.
- Enforce company policies, maintain positive employee relations, address grievances per company guidelines, and administer disciplinary actions as needed.
- Make recommendations related to hiring, promotions, transfers, and dismissals.
- Prepare reports, maintain required records, and participate in production and cross-functional meetings.
- Exemplify and promote the company’s leadership principles and best practices.
Competencies
- In-depth knowledge of machine shop methods, processes, tooling, and machining procedures.
- Strong understanding of quality requirements and ability to interpret complex engineering drawings.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to work across teams and independently resolve problems.
- Proven ability to develop, lead, and unify teams around shared goals and organizational culture.
- Strong skills in high-level capacity planning, scheduling, staffing, and training program development.
- Proficiency in Computer aided applications, ie...Microsoft.
- Ability to multitask, remain flexible, and maintain a positive and adaptable approach in a dynamic environment.
Education Requirements
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience preferred.
Experience
- Minimum of 5+ years of management-level experience in a machine shop or manufacturing environment.
- Demonstrated experience leading teams and supporting team development and growth.
