Epilepsy is a neurological condition involving the brain that makes people more susceptible to having recurrent, unprovoked seizures. Akron General’s Epilepsy Monitoring Unit (EMU) is a ten-bed monitoring unit allowing epilepsy specialists to diagnose a seizure problem accurately and design the best possible treatment plan. As an LPN, you will assist fellow caregivers in providing exceptional, top-quality care to a diverse patient population. In this role, you can make a lasting difference in the lives of patients, all while enhancing your nursing skills through hands-on experience and numerous educational resources offered within the Cleveland Clinic system.

A caregiver in this position works days from 7:00 a.m. – 7:30 p.m. with every other weekend and holiday rotation requirements. 

A caregiver who excels in this role will:  

  • Collect, document and report patient data and observations.  

  • Implement care plans as directed by an RN and contribute to care plan revisions.  

  • Administer medications and/or treatments authorized by a provider and observe patients for adverse reactions.    

  • Perform routine laboratory tests. 

  • Educate patients and family members.  

Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:  

  • Graduate of an accredited practical or vocational nursing program 

  • Current Ohio license as a Licensed Practical Nurse

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross  

Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include: 

  • One year of patient care experience

  • Epilepsy Monitoring Unit experience 

  • Critical care experience

Physical Requirements:

  • Requires full range of body motion including handling and lifting patient, manual and finger dexterity, and eye-hand coordination.

  • Requires standing and walking for extended periods of time.

  • Requires corrected vision and hearing to normal range.

  • Requires working under stressful conditions and irregular hours.

  • Exposure to communicable diseases and/or body fluids.

  • Medium Work - Exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

  • Physical Demand requirements are in excess of those for Light Work.

Personal Protective Equipment:

  • Follows standard precautions using personal protective equipment as required
