Cleveland Clinic's Emergency Department (ED) has a 23-hour observation unit that provides patients with additional time for evaluation and treatment. Patients may be referred to the observation unit if their condition requires more time than the ED can provide, or if their condition is not clear after an ED visit. During observation, patients may receive additional blood tests, X-rays, consultations with specialists, and treatment. After 24 hours, doctors will re-examine the patient to determine if they need further treatment or can go home. Patients may be discharged home or admitted to the hospital based on their progress. 

 

A caregiver in this position works night, 7:00pm—7:30am. Rotating weekends/holidays. 

 

A caregiver who excels in this role will:  

  • Collect, document and report patient data and observations.  

  • Implement care plans as directed by an RN and contribute to care plan revisions.  

  • Administer medications and/or treatments authorized by a provider and observe patients for adverse reactions.    

  • Perform routine laboratory tests. 

  • Educate patients and family members.  

 

Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:   

  • Graduate of an accredited Practical or Vocational Nursing Program  

  • Current Ohio license as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN)  

  • Basic Life Support(BLS) through American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross 

  • If in an ED, Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) through American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross upon hire or within one year of beginning work in the Emergency Department. 

  • If in an ED, Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) through American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross upon hire or within one year of beginning work in the Emergency Department. 

Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include: 

  • One year of patient care experience 


Physical Requirements:

  • Requires full body motion to move and lift patients, manual finger dexterity with good eye-hand coordination.

  • Involves extensive standing and walking.

  • Requires corrected vision and hearing to normal range.

  • Medium Work - Exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

  • Physical Demand requirements are in excess of those for Light Work.

Personal Protective Equipment:

  • Follows standard precautions using personal protective equipment as required.
