Every day, our products move millions of people as we aim to make driving safer, smarter, and more connected, shaping the future of transportation on a global scale.

The Role:
The Low Voltage Battery Lab Technician specializes in the safe and orderly preparation and testing of 12/48V batteries, low-voltage motors, and related components within a laboratory environment. This work enables the introduction of new technology and improves the quality, durability, and performance of electrified vehicles and related products developed by General Motors.

This position is based at the General Motors Technical Center in Warren, Michigan. The facility operates 24/7 with one shift of personnel and supports both traditional environmental testing and advanced development of GM’s next-generation low-voltage technologies. The lab directly supports GM engineers working on battery, motor, and electrification systems aligned with our vision of Zero Crashes, Zero Emissions, and Zero Congestion.

This role is an excellent fit for individuals interested in vehicle electrification, advanced low-voltage systems, and state-of-the-art testing and development methods.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and execute testing of 12V and 48V batteries, low-voltage motors, and related technologies to support validation and new product development.
  • Install, calibrate, and verify vehicle and bench instrumentation, including sensors, data acquisition systems (DAQ), and embedded controllers.
  • Perform electrical integration tasks such as wiring, harness routing, sensor installation, and signal verification for test systems.
  • Operate programmable power supplies, electronic loads, and motor controllers for controlled evaluation and data collection.
  • Conduct motor and battery performance and durability testing, including teardown and failure mode documentation.
  • Troubleshoot and diagnose electrical and electronic systems using oscilloscopes, multimeters, and data acquisition tools.
  • Design and fabricate specialized test fixtures, harnesses, and instrumentation to support experimental programs.
  • Collaborate with engineering teams to develop, execute, and refine diagnostic and validation procedures.
  • Analyze test results, generate reports with supporting visuals, and present findings to technical and leadership audiences.
  • Maintain organized records of test plans, procedures, and results in designated laboratory systems.
  • Ensure all test activities are performed safely and in compliance with GM safety and environmental protocols.
  • Support continuous improvement in test methodology, lab organization, and safety practices.

Required Qualifications:

  • Associate degree in a relevant technical field.
  • Minimum of 2 years of related work experience.
  • Strong understanding of mechanical and electrical systems; ability to read engineering drawings and schematics.
  • Experience with laboratory test automation and instrumentation.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience with vehicle instrumentation and embedded controllers.
  • Familiarity with CAN/LIN serial communication protocols.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or Physics.
  • Valid driver’s license with the ability to operate test vehicles.
  • Knowledge of lead-acid and lithium-ion battery systems and associated safety practices.
  • Experience with laboratory test equipment, data collection, and analysis tools.
