Sarasota County’s Planning and Development Services is hiring a Lot Drainage Specialist (Compliance/Maintenance Specialist III) to support safe, compliant land development throughout our community. This is a great opportunity for someone who enjoys a mix of fieldwork and plan review, takes pride in detail-oriented work, and wants to make a direct impact on local infrastructure and stormwater systems. You’ll collaborate with engineers and inspectors while helping ensure projects meet County, state, and federal standards.

We’re seeking candidates with a high school diploma (or equivalent) and at least 4 years of related experience, including 2 years of inspection experience. College coursework in a related field may substitute for experience. A valid Florida driver’s license is required. Preferred qualifications include a degree in engineering or a related field and stormwater inspector certification (or willingness to obtain the certification within 6 monthswe’ll help!). About the Position

In this role, you will...

  • Review and approve drainage plans, right-of-way permits, and culvert permits.

  • Evaluate lot drainage plans submitted with building permits for compliance with the Unified Development Code.

  • Conduct on-site inspections of private, public, and County-owned properties.

  • Ensure projects meet federal, state, and local regulations and County ordinances.

  • Partner closely with the Land Development Professional Engineer.

  • Provide back-up support to Land Development Inspectors during field inspections.

  • Help maintain safe, compliant, and well-managed community infrastructure.

About the Schedule

Work Hours:

  • Full-time, 40 hours per week.

  • Typical Schedule: Monday - Friday, 08:00 a.m. to 05:00 p.m.

About You

To be considered for this role, you must have the following:

  • High School Diploma or an equivalent education with 4+ years of related work experience; a minimum of 2 years must include related inspecting experience.

  • OR: College or university-level training in an appropriate field may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the required construction experience.

  • Valid Florida driver's license by date of hire.

The ideal candidate has the following knowledge, skills, and/or abilities:

  • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university in engineering or a related field.

  • Florida Department of Environmental Protection Stormwater, Erosion, and Sedimentation Control Inspector Certification, or be willing to obtain within 6 months from the date of hire. (We can help with this!)

  • Working knowledge of drainage construction methods, materials, tools, and equipment, with the ability to read and interpret subdivision and stormwater plans accurately.

  • Understanding of stormwater hydrology and hydraulics, including surveying, construction practices, scheduling, pavement design, and conducting thorough on-site inspections.

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with proficiency in Microsoft Office and internet research, and the ability to quickly learn and use County systems such as Accela, GIS, and Workday.

Subject to Passing Substance Screening: This position is subject to passing a pre-employment substance screening. An applicant who fails to pass a required drug screening test shall be disqualified from employment for a period of five years.

Physical Demands: Employees in this role must occasionally lift and/or move up to 20 lbs.

Starting Pay Range: $22.94 - $25.25
