About the opportunity

The Lived Experience Worker (Consumer) will complement the skills of clinical staff within the Post Admission Support team (PAST) at Mercy Mental Health & Wellbeing Service.

As part of the multidisciplinary team, the Lived Experience Worker (Consumer) provides support in the immediate post-discharge period, for up to 28 days. This approach supports consumers to transition safely and securely from an acute inpatient setting and become re-established and connected in a community environment, enabling people to remain well.

The Lived Experience Worker (Consumer) role is informed by your own life experience of mental health and personal recovery and relevant training. Lived Experience Workers are in a unique position to build authentic connections with people.

The Lived Experience Worker will convey hope and provide recovery oriented, trauma informed and strengths-based perspectives and will work collaboratively with the PAST team and other members of the Lived Experience Workforce across Mercy Mental Health and Wellbeing Service. This role will provide support through range of mediums which includes outreach, telehealth and site-based work.

Qualifications

  • Lived experience of mental illness with a practical knowledge and understanding of issues facing people with a mental illness

  • Understanding of the recovery process and ability to communicate a lived experience of recovery.

  • Formal qualification (or working towards) in mental health, mental health peer work i.e.- Intentional Peer Support/ Certificate IV in Mental Health (Peer Work), social work, psychology or similar.

  • Training in other relevant mental health and suicide specific areas.

  • Current unrestricted driver’s license.
