This role is part of our Poland-based technology hub and supports the critical infrastructure behind Moderna’s research and pharmaceutical production systems. As a Linux Systems Engineer, you’ll join a team of experienced professionals responsible for the end-to-end engineering, operation, and optimization of our Linux server environment. You’ll bring hands-on technical expertise in enterprise Linux distributions, automation, and system integration, with a focus on performance, availability, and security. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to scalable and resilient systems that underpin Moderna’s mission, while also staying close to the latest in automation, observability, and even generative AI tooling.
Here’s What You Will Do
Your key responsibilities will be:
Serving as the technical owner of enterprise Linux systems (Amazon Linux, Ubuntu, RHEL) deployed across on-premises and cloud platforms (VMware, AWS, Azure).
Designing, configuring, and maintaining Linux systems that support both research and production operations.
Performing root cause analysis and advanced troubleshooting across system, network, and authentication layers.
Ensuring system performance and availability through proactive monitoring and configuration management.
Automating infrastructure operations using tools such as shell scripting, Ansible, Python, Terraform, or other infrastructure-as-code frameworks.
Your responsibilities will also include:
Integrating Linux systems with Active Directory using tools such as realmd, sssd, and winbind.
Configuring Kerberos, LDAP, NSS, PAM, TLS/SSL, keytabs, and SPNs.
Supporting containerized workloads leveraging Docker, Podman, and Kubernetes.
Implementing and maintaining storage solutions including LVM, iSCSI, and NFS, emphasizing performance and resilience.
Partnering closely with cybersecurity teams to maintain compliance and integrate with Moderna’s security software suite.
Contributing to observability efforts using Prometheus, Dynatrace, or Splunk.
Developing implementation plans, test procedures, and scripts for operational readiness.
Maintaining clear documentation, diagrams, and up-to-date system inventories.
Participating in on-call rotations and addressing escalated incidents.

Here’s What You’ll Need (Basic Qualifications)
Bachelor’s degree in computer science, engineering, or related field (or equivalent experience).
3–5 years of professional experience supporting Linux in a mixed OS environment
Strong understanding of multiple Linux distros including all core services/daemons
Proven ability to troubleshoot system, network, and performance issues.
Experience with patch management process and tooling, endpoint protection, compliance and server hardening.
Familiarity with hybrid multi-cloud environments and virtualization technologies.
Excellent communication, documentation, and collaboration skills, including working across global teams.
Here’s What You’ll Bring to the Table (Preferred Qualifications)
Linux certifications such as RHCSA/RHCE, LFCS/LFCE, or LPIC.
Industry certifications: AWS, CISSP, CISM, ITIL.
Experience in regulated or security-sensitive environments (e.g., GxP, DISA-STIG, CIS, PCI).
Ability to work independently, develop long term strategic Infrastructure enterprise goals.
