Glimpse of the Job
The Library Specialist I will be responsible for providing basic circulation and front desk coverage at Galveston’s AskUs Service desk, Sunday through Thursday 4:00pm – 1:00am. The selected candidate will assist with processing basic interlibrary loan materials and print reserves requests. Additional duties will include assisting with ensuring building safety and security during the late evening and overnight hours and assigning work tasks/projects to student employees. This is an in-person opportunity. The selected candidate will be expected to work on our Galveston campus.
Schedule:
Must be able to adjust schedule on an occasional basis to help cover during extended hours or in the event of an emergency.
Must be able to adjust to regular 8:00am – 5:00pm hours during periods between academic semesters.
Opportunities to Contribute
Provide basic late evening/overnight Circulation Services.
Maintain a front desk operations atmosphere that promotes customer satisfaction.
Use the library computer system to charge/discharge materials to users.
Demonstrate basic conflict resolution skills with users.
Interpret and explain library guidelines.
Provide effective referrals to the unit manager or Librarian as appropriate.
Use the public online catalog to direct users to materials in the collection.
Help with tasks related to renewals, recalls, locates, new materials receiving, course reserves, and equipment.
Answer both general and routine and standard inquiries about reserves, reference, document delivery and interlibrary loan or needed resources.
Process and pull expired items from the hold shelf.
Assist with questions from College Station Evans/Annex course reserves and Interlibrary loan on Galveston materials.
Assist in monitoring the front doors, making rounds, monitoring activities in the building, and straightening public areas.
Respond and take appropriate action when security and/or fire alarms are set off or other building crises occur.
Document emergencies/mishaps/unusual situations and act as proctor in the event of an emergency.
Collaborate with other support staff.
Provide the best service possible to library users through participatory decision-making and implementation of operations and guidelines.
Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent.
One year of customer service and/or clerical experience.
Ability to move medium weight boxes, books, heavy book truck or similar items.
Ability to handle material which can contain dust or microscopic mold spores.
Preferred Qualifications
Conflict resolution skills.
Ability to exercise discretion in interpreting guidelines and decision-making.
Library experience with circulation, ILL, course reserves or reference.
Prior work experience with night or weekend hours.
One year of related library, office, or customer service experience.
Knowledge of email, word processing, spreadsheet applications and internet searches.
Good interpersonal skills.
Reliable attendance.
Excellent communication and customer service skills.
Salary: $15.85 an hour
