UMB’s Corporate Legal department serves many lines of business throughout our footprint by providing legal education, counsel and advice.  They facilitate the needs of their clients (UMB Financial Corporation, its subsidiaries and its shareholders) through subject matter expertise, as well as relationships with outside counsel, where necessary. 

The Legal Counsel at UMB, works hand in hand with line of business leaders to research and advise on legal issues; evaluate, educate clients regarding, and help to minimize risk; review, negotiate and draft agreements; participate in projects and process improvements; prepare and distribute regular status reports; summarize trends and issues.

How you’ll spend your time:  

  • Collaborate with different lines of businesses and corporate support functions to ensure that operations and strategies are managed in compliance with applicable laws and regulations
  • Will be a trusted advisor to senior leaders and be the primary consultant with clients on legal issues.
  • Monitor and analyze evolving legal requirements and proposed regulations/legislation in assigned practice areas and advises senior management of potential risks.
  • Manage outside counsel on commercial deposit, treasury management, and payment systems matters and acts as a liaison between senior leaders and outside counsel.
  • Identify and analyze legal issues demonstrating familiarity with payment systems and related technology, Federal Reserve Board regulations (Reg. CC and Reg. J) to the extent they impact commercial banking payment products, and a comfort in applying legal skills and knowledge to assist UMB’s line of business in selecting, vetting and implementing cutting edge consumer and commercial third-party technology to facilitate fast and more secure payments.
  • Review, negotiate and draft agreements. Heavy emphasis on documentation which supports the bank’s commercial deposit treasury management services activities, including template and form documentation related to payments systems and new product offerings, commercial deposit account documentation, and deposit account control agreements.  

We’re excited to talk with you if you have:  

  • JD and license to practice law
  • 4+ years of commercial banking legal experience
  • Mastery of payment systems law, including Article 4A of the UCC, the NACHA rules, familiarity with check and ACH clearinghouse arrangements.
  • Experience negotiating complex documents with sophisticated opposing counsel.
  • Strong leadership and teaming capabilities and the ability to operate independently and collaboratively.
  • Exceptional interpersonal, negotiation, and written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong working knowledge of legal issues in assigned areas.
  • Strong skills in relationship building, critical thinking, strategic vision, and ability to mitigate risk in decision making.

Compensation Range:

$99,750.00 - $214,370.00

The posted compensation range on this listing represents UMB’s standard for this role, but the actual compensation may vary by geographic location, experience level, and other job-related factors.
