We are seeking an experienced Legal Counsel – Employment and Dispute Resolution to join RMIT’s Legal Services Group. This role provides practical, solutions-focused legal advice across employment and student-related dispute matters within a large, complex public institution.
You will act as a trusted adviser to senior stakeholders across the University, managing matters with a high degree of autonomy while supporting significant litigation and sensitive disputes.
This role is ideal for an employment lawyer at approximately the 4–6-year post-admission level, with strong stakeholder engagement skills and the ability to navigate complex governance environments.
About You
You are a confident, adaptable legal professional who thrives in complex environments and brings sound judgment, strong technical capability and collaborative problem-solving skills.
You will demonstrate:
At least 4 years post-qualification experience, with the ability to manage legal matters independently.
Strong technical expertise and working knowledge of:
Employment law
Equal opportunity and discrimination legislation
Occupational Health and Safety
Privacy and Freedom of Information (or the ability to rapidly develop capability in these areas)
Proven experience in dispute resolution and stakeholder engagement within complex organisations.
The ability to work autonomously while collaborating closely with senior legal colleagues.
High-level written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to translate legal risk into practical advice.
Desirable:
Experience in higher education, education or the public sector.
Knowledge of legal obligations relating to gender-based violence, including the National Higher Education Code to Prevent and Respond to Gender-Based Violence.
