Legal Counsel– Hybrid
The Opportunity
We are seeking a diverse individual with strong legal skills to join the legal team at the Alberta Energy Regulator (AER). The Law Branch is the AER’s trusted in-house legal department, committed to providing exceptional legal and strategic advice and litigation services to support all aspects of the AER’s core business, strategic priorities, and the achievement of the AER’s mandate.
The AER is the single regulator of energy development in Alberta – from application and exploration to construction and operation, to decommissioning, closure and reclamation. We are passionate about our mandate – to provide for the efficient, safe, orderly, and environmentally responsible development of energy and mineral resources in Alberta through our regulatory activities. This includes allocating and conserving water resources, managing public lands, and protecting the environment while providing economic benefits for all Albertans.
Experience genuine teamwork by working with lawyers, and staff across the AER, to deliver legally sound innovative solutions. Law Branch members are involved in all aspects of regulating energy resource activity throughout the energy lifecycle. The work is varied, stimulating, and rewarding. What your day-to-day will look like:
Provide legal advice to AER personnel in all branches and offices, including hearing commissioners and delegated decision makers, on all facets of the AER’s business and regulatory functions, in particular the processing of regulatory appeals, applications and related statements of concern and providing legal support on closure, compliance and enforcement matters.
Provide legal analysis, interpretation, advice and opinions regarding AER administered legislation and legislation (including FOIP legislation, insolvency legislation and related jurisprudence) to which the AER is subject, rules and regulatory instruments, and support policy development through membership on applicable internal committees.
Participate in AER hearings and ADR processes.
What we’re looking for in you:
Member in good standing of the Law Society of Alberta
Four to Fifteen plus (4 -15+) years of experience providing legal services in at least two of the following areas: administrative/regulatory law, litigation, bankruptcy & insolvency, water law, energy/environmental law and aboriginal law
Exceptional interpersonal communication skills in combined with superior writing skills
Superior legal research skills
Strong attention to detail with high importance placed on accuracy and high calibre work products
A strong critical thinker, with an agile, collaborative and team focused approach
Experience working in-house in a public/regulatory body, quasi-judicial board or agency, or government environment is considered an asset, but not essential.
Experience appearing before tribunals or advising tribunals or decision makers is considered an asset.
