Who We Are

The Mission of the  Denver District Attorney's Office is to professionally and completely prosecute crimes and investigate potential crimes on behalf of the people of the State of Colorado, and in doing so, do justice, advocate for victims' rights and advise and consult in the deterrence and prevention of crime; to ensure the open, evenhanded and humane administration of justice. The office employs approximately 120 attorneys and 180 support staff, who are responsible for more than 6,000 felony and 12,000 misdemeanor prosecutions annually. The elected District Attorney is the chief law enforcement officer in the City and County of Denver and is responsible for the prosecution of violations of Colorado State Laws. The current Denver District Attorney is John Walsh. We are currently recruiting for a Crime Victim Compensation Specialist.

Location 

In this position you can expect to work on site at the Republic Plaza building located at 370 17th St., Suite 5300 Denver, CO 80202, Monday through Friday from 8:00AM - 5:00PM.

As a Legal Administrative Assistant you will provide information to courts, personnel, attorneys and to the public by preparing legal and managing case files.

On a day to day basis you will also:

Legal Document Preparation & Filing

  • Prepare and draft legal documents including motions, court orders, memorandums, correspondence, and intervention letters
  • Review, prepare, and process petitions such as record sealing, expungement, and sex offender registration requests
  • Submit filings through the Colorado Courts e‑filing system
  • Interpret legal documents and explain procedures to complainants and stakeholders

Case File Management & Tracking

  • Maintain and organize electronic and physical case files, ensuring accuracy, completeness, and secure handling of sensitive materials
  • Track case status, court dates, statutory deadlines, compliance requirements, and outcomes
  • Update case records and maintain logs, reports, and program data
  • Prepare case summaries and document case positions for attorney review
  • Maintain Grand Jury transcripts and exhibits securely and assist the Grand Jury Clerk as needed

Research & Investigative Support

  • Conduct legal and factual research using statutes, judicial guidelines, public records, and court databases
  • Run criminal histories, obtain court records, and collect supporting documentation
  • Research eligibility for petitions and expungements using Colorado statutes and judicial standards
  • Conduct background searches, contact collateral agencies, and gather information from public record sources
  • Assist investigators—including At‑Risk Investigators—with research, interviews, and evidence gathering
  • Support specialized investigations, including financial exploitation and referrals from city agencies
  • Assist with documentation for Motions to Determine Factual Innocence

Complaint Intake & Public Interaction

  • Review complaints and petitions for sufficiency and coordinate with complainants to gather additional information
  • Provide daily support through the Fraud Line and other communication channels; resolve consumer issues when possible
  • Explain complaint processes and guide individuals in gathering required documentation
  • Respond to inquiries from community members, agencies, and law enforcement via phone, email, and mail
  • Communicate case decisions to complainants and assist with follow‑up actions as directed by the Chief Deputy District Attorney

Interagency Coordination & Compliance

  • Report at‑risk complaints to Denver DHS Adult Protective Services per statutory requirements and coordinate with law enforcement
  • Serve as the District Attorney’s Office representative at interagency meetings and workgroups
  • Coordinate interviews, prepare interview memorandums, and collaborate with law enforcement agencies
  • Coordinate follow‑up communication with complainants and suspects regarding case status and next steps

Program & Administrative Support

  • Maintain Denver Bad Check Program records, reporting, and communication with merchants and check writers
  • Prepare ECU (Economic Crime Unit) intake statistics, including quarterly and annual reports
  • Coordinate investigative and administrative tasks as directed to support office operations

What You'll Bring

  • Can prioritize, coordinate, and schedule work to allow for efficient and effective completion of the work assignment.
  • Experience with Microsoft Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook)

Required Minimum Qualifications

  • Education requirement: Graduation from high school or the possession of a GED, HiSET or TASC Certificate

  • Experience Requirement: Three (3) years of general clerical experience including One (1) year of legal clerical experience preparing legal documents such as: amendments, summonses, discovery orders, citations, motions and pleadings

  • Education/Experience Equivalency: Additional appropriate education may be substituted for the minimum experience requirement.
