Job Description

The Lead Writer for Enterprise Content is responsible for telling our most powerful stories and shaping the narrative foundation for major marketing campaigns across platforms and mediums—including long‑form narratives, short‑form video scripts, and digital storytelling. This role increases St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital brand awareness and fundraising by producing deeply reported, authentic stories that reach diverse audiences and elevate the organization’s iconic brand.
This position serves as a senior writer on the Enterprise Creative and Content Team and collaborates with writers across the organization to strengthen storytelling craft. The role works closely with the Director of Writing and partners throughout the organization to deliver high‑quality, journalistic‑style content across channels.
Essential Job Functions
Lead Writing & Narrative Development
- Serve as a lead writer producing high‑quality, audience‑focused storytelling and narrative frameworks across platforms and mediums.
- Execute ideas assigned by senior leadership and independently originate impactful story concepts that serve as the creative and narrative foundation for enterprise‑level marketing campaigns.
- Repurpose and adapt content across programs and platforms to maximize efficiency and reach.
Collaboration & Skill Development
- Collaborate with writers across the organization on story structure, writing technique, interviewing, ideation, and digital storytelling tools.
- Provide ongoing feedback and support to enhance the organization’s overall storytelling capability and content engagement.
Cross‑Functional Content Planning
- Partner with team leadership and cross‑functional marketing teams to plan and execute ambitious content strategies for major events and initiatives.
- Support storytelling around major news and institutional updates related to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and ALSAC.
Storytelling Innovation
- Identify and develop new storytelling approaches and narrative genres to reach broader and more diverse audiences.
- Support experimentation with new formats, including live storytelling, podcasting, and interactive graphics. Innovation is a priority.
Integrated Storytelling Collaboration
- Work closely with Patient Engagement, audience planners, video teams, and photography to ensure a cohesive, integrated approach to enterprise storytelling.
Data‑Driven Narrative Development
- Shape content using audience insights and performance data to ensure stories remain relevant, mission‑aligned, and audience‑centered.
- Develop narratives that accurately reflect and elevate scientific and medical advancements from St. Jude.
Editorial Support
- Serve as editor for special projects or provide backup editing support as needed.
Enterprise Collaboration
- Support and collaborate on narrative and content efforts across all teams and departments throughout the enterprise.
Research & Continuous Improvement
- Monitor and research storytelling practices across journalism, brand publishing, and peer nonprofits.
- Become an expert in the St. Jude/ALSAC brand and strategic positioning.
- Use analytics to refine storytelling strategies, improve donor acquisition and conversion, and test new storytelling styles and formats.
- Experiment with emerging channels and storytelling technologies and participate in innovation initiatives.
Job Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree required (journalism preferred).
Minimum 10 years of experience in reporting, writing, or a similar field, particularly in digital environments. - Extensive knowledge of journalistic‑style reporting, writing, and editing.
- Strong understanding of social media, public relations, and integrated communications.
- Ability to understand complex written and verbal instructions.
- Excellent analytical and problem‑solving skills.
- Highly organized with the ability to multitask and work under tight deadlines.
- Strong command of English grammar, spelling, and usage; proficiency with AP Style.
- Detailed knowledge of communication tools and mediums, including digital platforms.
- Understanding of industry trends and digital tools that enhance communications.
- Experience developing national campaigns and content initiatives with measurable results.
- High level of understanding of communications law and copyright considerations.
- Exceptional interpersonal, diplomatic, and negotiation skills.
Work Location
This position is based at ALSAC’s National Executive Office in Memphis, TN and is eligible for a hybrid work schedule.
