Surgical Technologists assist in surgical procedures under the supervision of surgeons and registered nurses and ensure quality patient care during the operative procedure and maintaining a sterile field. Surgical Technologists perform a variety of functions, such as checking supplies and equipment, setting up sterile tables, performing appropriate counts, draping the sterile field, passing instruments to the surgeon and assistant during the procedure, preparing sterile dressing and clean instruments for terminal sterilization. Surgery would not be possible if it were not for Surgical Technologists. 

As Lead Surgical Technologist, you will provide leadership and guidance to assigned surgical technologists in the operating room, ensuring optimal performance, efficiency, and quality outcomes under the supervision of the Surgical Manager and Coordinator/Assistant, while also assisting with surgical technologist duties as needed.

A caregiver in this position works from 6:30 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. OR 7:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. with on-call requirements.

A caregiver who excels in this role will:  

  • Monitor, direct and oversee the activities of assigned Surgical Technologists in the OR.  
  • Perform duties of a Surgical Technologist as needed.  
  • Provide patient care in the OR by performing in a scrub role. 
  • Assist in the circulating role as needed.  
  • Collaborate with SPD to maintain instruments and specialty trays.  
  • Provide performance documentation.  
  • Assume department leadership in the absence of the supervisor.  
  • Review surgical schedules and service line shift reports daily to ensure resources are available for surgical procedures.  
  • Seek ways to eliminate errors, reduce turnaround time, maintain workflow and improve service.  
  • Perform and oversee precepting.  

Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:  

  • Certified Surgical Technologist 
  • Surgical Technology Program accredited through CAAHEP or ABHES required. Completion of military surgical technology program will meet the requirements of an accredited Surgical Technology Program. Certification as a Surgical Technologist waives the educational requirement for hire. Acceptable certifications for this route are TS-C (through the National Center for Competency Training) or CST (through the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting) 
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross 
  • Empathize and recognize with patients suffering from physical or emotional difficulties and be sensitive to patient needs
  • Internal caregivers: one year of experience in a Surgical Technologist role  
  • External future caregivers: two years of experience in a Surgical Technologist role

Physical Requirements:

  • Requires a full range of body motion including ability to lift and/or bear the weight of 100 pounds with assistance, or more while pulling, lifting, pushing and transferring patients to and from various apparatus; regularly pushes moderate to heavy weight of 100 pounds or more.

  • Exposure to body fluids.

  • Must be available for flexible scheduling according to the needs of the surgical area.

  • Floating may be expected per assignment policies within the surgical support department.

Personal Protective Equipment:

  • Follows standard precautions using personal protective equipment as required.
