Lead Software Engineer - SDET, Java, Spring

About this role:

Wells Fargo is seeking a Lead Software Engineer


In this role, you will:

  • Lead complex technology initiatives including those that are companywide with broad impact
  • Act as a key participant in developing standards and companywide best practices for engineering complex and large scale technology solutions for technology engineering disciplines
  • Design, code, test, debug, and document for projects and programs
  • Review and analyze complex, large-scale technology solutions for tactical and strategic business objectives, enterprise technological environment, and technical challenges that require in-depth evaluation of multiple factors, including intangibles or unprecedented technical factors
  • Make decisions in developing standard and companywide best practices for engineering and technology solutions requiring understanding of industry best practices and new technologies, influencing and leading technology team to meet deliverables and drive new initiatives
  • Collaborate and consult with key technical experts, senior technology team, and external industry groups to resolve complex technical issues and achieve goals
  • Lead projects, teams, or serve as a peer mentor


Required Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of Software Engineering experience, or equivalent demonstrated through one or a combination of the following: work experience, training, military experience, education


Desired Qualifications:

  • 11+ years of Strong experience with automation tools such as Selenium, Appium, REST Assured, Playwright, or equivalent, with the ability to apply BDD practices when designing test scenarios. Proficient in Java for developing robust automation frameworks.
  • Strong programming skills in Java (primary), Spring and good-to-have proficiency in Python, with the ability to write clean, maintainable, and modular code
  • Familiarity with MongoDB, including querying, data validation, and understanding of document schemas.
  • Experience in the payments domain with working knowledge of Wires/SWIFT, and ISO 20022 message structures.
  • Familiarity with ElasticSearch, including indexing concepts, search/query validation, and interpreting results.
  • Familiarity with GenAI tools such as GitHub Copilot, Agentic AI workflows, and LLM‑based test generation.
  • Ability to think like a developer — reading logs, debugging issues, analyzing code flow, and understanding data models.
  • Strong problem‑solving ability, analytical thinking, and attention to detail.
  • Experience working in Agile/Scrum environments with shift‑left testing practices and early involvement in requirement refinement.

Automation Engineering & Framework Development

  • Design and maintain scalable automation frameworks for functional, regression, API, integration.
  • Implement automation using Selenium, REST Assured, Playwright automation tools, following BDD practices and writing clear, behavior driven test scenarios
  • Build reusable libraries, utilities, and components aligned with software engineering best practices.
  • Ensure automation solutions are maintainable, modular, and aligned with coding standards.

Developer‑Oriented Skills & Technical Depth

  • Strong programming skills in Java (primary) and good-to-have proficiency in Python, with the ability to write clean, maintainable, and modular code
  • Familiarity with MongoDB, including basic queries, data validation, and understanding of document schemas.
  • Familiarity with ElasticSearch for indexing concepts, search validation, and working with query DSL.
  • Contribute to design discussions with a developer mindset, understanding system flows, APIs, logs, and data models.

GenAI‑Driven Quality Engineering

  • Utilize GitHub Copilot, Agentic AI workflows, LLM-based test generation, and automation accelerators for QA efficiency.
  • Adopt AI‑assist for writing tests, analyzing logs, debugging failures, and enhancing coverage.
  • Explore innovative GenAI use cases to improve testing productivity and reduce manual effort.

Payments Domain Expertise

  • Experience working in the payments domain (banking, financial services, or payment processing systems).
  • Good functional understanding of Wires or SWIFT payment flows.
  • Knowledge of ISO 20022 messaging standards, schema elements, and message structures for validation and testing.
  • Ability to interpret payment messages, understand field-level rules, and collaborate with developers/business teams on domain logic.

Quality Strategy & Collaboration

  • Define and implement automation strategies that complement functional testing and shift left quality.
  • Participate in requirement reviews, provide testability feedback, and ensure clarity of acceptance criteria.
  • Support modernization and migration initiatives with automated data validation and message testing.

Job Expectations:

  • We are open for both the locations - Hyderabad or Bangalore and will be required to work in the office as per organizations In Office Adherence / Return To Office (RTO)
  • Work closely with QA, development, and business teams to align automation goals.
  • Conduct workshops and training sessions on automation tools and practices.
  • Communicate automation progress, risks, and benefits to stakeholders.
  • Mentor junior automation engineers and guide them on frameworks, coding standards, and domain knowledge.
  • Establish best practices for automation development, maintenance, versioning, and troubleshooting.
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives focused on stability, coverage, relevance, and speed.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and stakeholder management skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and deliver in agile environments.
