About Us

MarketAxess is on a journey to digitally transform one of the world’s largest financial markets, enabling the shift from analog, phone-based trading to a fully electronic marketplace. Why does this matter? Because our platform makes trading fixed-income more accessible, ultimately improving transparency, efficiency, and competition in the marketplace. Changing the way an established industry transacts is no easy feat. There will be twists and turns, because no one’s ever done this before. But now, more than 2,000 clients around the world rely on our solutions, and that number is only expected to grow in the years ahead. We know where we’re going. How we get there is up to us. Join us and help Take Us There.

The Role

We are seeking an experienced Lead Site Reliability Engineer (SRE) to help build our next-generation trading platform. This role is hands-on and deeply technical, ideal for someone passionate about building cloud-native, streaming microservices at scale and driving our application modernization initiatives.

You’ll lead by example—designing, coding, and automating solutions that improve reliability, scalability, and performance. Your work will set the standard for SRE best practices across the team, from observability and incident response to CI/CD and infrastructure as code. Collaboration is key: you’ll partner with engineers and stakeholders to solve complex technical challenges and ensure exceptional engineering quality and documentation.

Success in this role means embracing continuous learning and adapting to emerging technologies as we accelerate our journey to public cloud and Kubernetes. You’ll actively engage with internal users, incorporating feedback into solutions and building trust as a technical authority and collaborator.

We embrace a culture of collaboration and experimentation while striving and encouraging all team members to focus on continuous improvement and learning. We openly welcome diverse perspectives and people who are not afraid to challenge assumptions and prior ways of working.  Otherwise, how do we innovate, learn and grow as a team and individuals?

How You’ll Help Take Us There

  • Drive adoption of SRE best practices through hands-on implementation and technical guidance.
  • Automate relentlessly—identify manual processes and build innovative solutions to eliminate toil.
  • Implement and optimize observability tools to ensure compliance and provide deep insights into system health.
  • Lead technical initiatives around containerization, cloud-native architectures, and DevOps excellence.
  • Analyze incidents and trends to stay ahead of issues and proactively improve reliability.
  • Define and monitor SLIs/SLOs that measure and improve service performance.
  • Champion agile engineering practices and DevOps methodologies through example and mentorship.
  • Review and optimize system performance metrics in collaboration with stakeholders.
  • Stay ahead of tech trends—experiment, learn, and share knowledge within internal and external communities.
  • Promote SRE culture across teams through advocacy and technical enablement.
  • Design and maintain CI/CD pipelines for robust, automated delivery.
  • Create deployment and rollback strategies that ensure safe, reliable releases.
  • Scale engineering best practices via automation, testing, and infrastructure as code.

What We’re Looking For

  • 7+ years of experience in Site Reliability Engineering, DevOps, or related roles, with a proven track record of hands-on technical delivery.
  • Deep expertise in public cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, or Azure) and Infrastructure as Code tools (Terraform preferred).
  • Strong programming skills in at least one major language (Java or Python) and proficiency in scripting (e.g., Bash, Shell).
  • Ownership of FinOps practices for X-Pro, responsible for cloud cost optimization, budgeting, and implementing financial governance across environments to ensure efficiency and transparency.
  • Hands-on experience with containerization and orchestration (Docker, Kubernetes, EKS/AKS/OpenShift).
  • Proven ability to design and implement CI/CD pipelines using tools like Jenkins, GitHub Actions, or similar.
  • Solid understanding of observability practices—metrics, logging, tracing—and experience with tools like Prometheus, Grafana, ELK, or equivalent.
  • Experience defining and monitoring SLIs/SLOs and driving reliability improvements based on data.
  • Strong automation mindset—comfortable eliminating manual processes through tooling and scripts.
  • Knowledge of incident management and postmortem analysis, with ability to derive actionable insights.
  • Familiarity with security and compliance in cloud environments and DevSecOps principles.
  • Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills, with ability to tackle complex distributed systems challenges.
  • Outstanding communication skills—able to clearly articulate technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences and collaborate effectively across teams.
  • Ability to influence technical direction and mentor peers, without formal people management responsibilities.
  • BS/MS in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent practical experience.
