HOW WILL YOU MAKE AN IMPACT

This role is based at the Thermo Fisher Scientific Cramlington facility and operates on a 4-on, 4-off rotational shift pattern, reporting directly to a QC Supervisor.

The Lead QC Technician is responsible for supporting and performing quality control activities across the different stages of the manufacturing process. The role requires a strong understanding of QC principles, excellent attention to detail, and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively with cross-functional teams.

A key responsibility of this position is to ensure that all raw materials and products consistently meet or exceed industry standards and customer expectations. The Lead QC Technician will also proactively identify and implement opportunities to improve QC efficiency, reduce waste, and enhance overall performance.

In addition, the role involves coaching, mentoring and supporting QC Technicians, promoting best practices, and contributing to team development. Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills are essential, along with the confidence to provide guidance and technical expertise.

In the absence of the shift QC Supervisor, the Lead QC Technician will assume supervisory responsibilities to ensure continuity of operations.

WHAT YOU WILL DO:

  • Perform QC testing and inspection of raw materials, in-process samples, and finished products in line with specifications, GMP, and quality standards.

  • Work within warehouse and cleanroom environments, adhering to all relevant procedures and contamination control requirements.

  • Maintain and improve QC procedures, protocols, and controlled documentation.

  • Analyse and trend QC data to identify issues, drive improvements, and support decision-making.

  • Lead and support investigations into deviations and non-conformances, ensuring timely root cause analysis and effective CAPAs.

  • Train, mentor, and assess QC Technicians, promoting best practices and maintaining team competency (train-the-trainer).

  • Support continuous improvement initiatives to enhance quality, efficiency, and waste reduction.

  • Collaborate with Supplier Quality on supplier performance, material issues, and investigations.

  • Review documentation to ensure compliance with GMP and internal requirements.

  • Ensure QC consumables and resources are available to support operations.

  • Participate in audits and confidently represent QC processes.

  • Act as QC representative in cross-functional activities and investigations.

  • Maintain oversight of QC equipment calibration in collaboration with Engineering.

  • Deputise for the QC Supervisor as required, including coordinating shift activities and workload.

REQUIREMENTS:

Education: (EMEA)

  • Science related GCSEs or equivalent

EXPERIENCE:

  • Required: Minimum of 2 years of work experience in QA or QC or related field

  • Preferred: Experience in a cGMP environment

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES:

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills

  • Excellent team work and problem solving skills

  • Ability to manage priorities and work to set timeframes

  • Excellent IT skills

  • Willingness to learn and drive process improvements

  • Proficient in using laboratory equipment and instruments for quality control testing

  • Physical Requirements:

    • Ability to stand and/or walk for extended periods and perform physical activities including bending, reaching, and lifting up to 25–50 lbs.

    • Manual dexterity and visual acuity required to operate testing equipment, perform detailed inspections, and accurately read gauges, instruments, and documentation.

    • Ability to work safely in an environment with exposure to noise, temperature variations, chemicals, and moving machinery while wearing required personal protective equipment (PPE).
