Lead Product Designer

Background: The Digital Proposition team is central to M&G Life’s ambition to deliver digital-first, market-leading omni-channel experiences for customers and advisers. As digital propositions evolve rapidly, the Product Design function ensures that every journey is customer-centric, measurable, compliant, and accelerates delivery. The LPD role is pivotal in translating strategic direction into actionable, high-quality design outcomes that support growth, retention, and operational efficiency.

Role Summary

The Lead Product Designer provides strategic leadership and hands-on oversight of end-to-end digital design across the open and closed book propositions. The role owns design strategy and standards, ensures consistency, accessibility and regulatory alignment (including Consumer Duty), and prioritises design work to support the roadmap led by Product Owners. The LPD translates the departments omni-channel, outcome-driven mandate into concrete, testable design artefacts, research and measures that deliver loyalty, retention and operational efficiency.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the design strategy and standards for digital-first, omni-channel journeys, ensuring consistency, accessibility, and alignment with business outcomes.
  • Oversee the creation and maintenance of end-to-end journey maps and service blueprints that span digital and non-digital touchpoints.
  • Drive a data-driven approach to design, embedding measurable outcomes and supporting continuous improvement through analytics and feedback.
  • Collaborate with Product Owners, Propositions, Customer Services, Technology, and Marketing to deliver seamless experiences for customers and advisers across all channels.
  • Ensure all designs meet regulatory requirements, including Consumer Duty, and support operational efficiency throughout the omni-channel proposition.
  • Coach and develop the Product Design team, fostering a culture of excellence, empowerment, and collaboration.
  • Represent Product Design in governance and planning forums, ensuring design priorities align with strategic objectives and the broader omni-channel vision.

Core Competencies & Attributes

  • Customer-centric, strategic design leadership with strong systems thinking - able to connect UI decisions to end-to-end outcomes and business value.
  • Data-driven with a test-and-learn mindset; comfortable setting metrics and closing the loop from analytics to design iteration.
  • Regulatory literacy (inc. Consumer Duty, GDPR); ensures designs are accessible, inclusive, and compliant without compromising experience quality.
  • Influential collaborator across Propositions, Customer Services, Technology, Change, Marketing and governance forums; clear, persuasive communicator.
  • People leadership - builds capability, sets standards, coaches, and fosters a culture of empowerment, excellence and accountability.

Experience & Qualifications

Essential:

  • Experience leading product/UX/service design for complex, regulated digital services in financial services.
  • Experience in delivering for financial advisers, or a similar B2B2C model.
  • Proven record of delivering measurable improvements to journeys (adviser and/or customer) using analytics, research and structured experimentation.
  • Demonstrable experience working in a regulated environment with strong understanding of Consumer Duty and other regulations (or equivalent).
  • Expertise in end-to-end journey design (service blueprints, IA, flows), screen-level design and prototyping (e.g., Figma), and usability/accessibility testing.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills; able to represent design in governance and steer trade-off decisions.
  • Experience working with agile delivery teams and backlogs; able to translate insights into backlog items with clear acceptance criteria and meet delivery timelines.

Desirable:

  • Experience in product development or proposition management; familiarity with data/analytics tooling and design systems at scale.
  • Knowledge of the UK life & pensions market (open and closed book), adviser journeys and third-party servicing models.
