The role will be part of a new team within the Audience division. This individual will work closely with Product and Engineering to develop new opportunities and optimise existing ones focused on connecting users who are looking to buy or sell homes with relevant agents and agencies. 
 

This role’s purpose

  • The product Design Lead role is a role for a focused Design Specialist.

  • The role exists for a design expert, working autonomously to lead and innovate within large, complex projects.

  • The primary responsibility of a design lead will be to spearhead design initiatives, ensuring the highest standards of creativity, usability, and brand coherence across all aspects of our product. 

  • The role serves as a brand guardian, actively participating in shaping and evolving our brand identity within the product landscape.

  • A Design Lead is also focused on growth and mentorship of team members and the broader design community with active engagement with design across 

  • Additionally, you will contribute to the development and maintenance of our design system, ensuring consistency and efficiency in our design processes.
     

What success looks like

  • Partnering with product managers, engineers, researchers, and SEO, to oversee the user experience of a product from conception until launch

  • Contributing to strategic decisions and helping shape priorities and scope during planning

  • Design and prototype solutions that meet customer needs and achieve business outcomes

  • Conduct research to build empathy and understanding of our customers and evaluate solutions during the delivery phase of projects

  • Working collaboratively within a cross-functional scrum team to ship high-quality product at high velocity, balancing trade-offs and constraints along the way

  • Leading or facilitating workshops to foster collaboration and alignment
     

Key relationships
 

Upwards:

  • Product Design Manager - Direct people manager responsible for providing resources for the PDL and career development

  • Head of Design -  Indirect people manager, should set vision and direction for the team and help with interpreting organisational strategy to the team level for the PDTL


Peers:

  • Product Design Leads - Helping build the team culture and provide the environment for a good design culture to evolve.


Downwards:

  • Product Designers and Senior Product Designers


Outwards:

  • Senior, Principal and Head of products - Product managers who set direction and prioritise work for the product teams. The PDL is responsible for maintaining these relationships and helping prioritise work in these areas with a particular focus on consistency, quality and impact of design work for these teams.

  • Tech leads - The PDL is responsible for ensuring designs are able to be implemented and to work with the tech leads to ensure design supports aligned product/tech delivery goals


Experience, education and certifications

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Design, Human-Computer Interaction, or a related field.

  • The ability to illustrate deep skill and understanding in at least one design sub discipline

   

Technical Experience:

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in product design, UX/UI design, or a related role.

  • Proficiency in design tools such as Sketch, Figma, Adobe XD, or similar.

  • Strong portfolio showcasing a range of design projects with a focus on user-centred design principles and processes.

  • Experience in conducting user research and usability testing.

  • Demonstrated ability to create wireframes, prototypes, and high-fidelity designs.

  • Experience working in agile development environments and collaborating with cross-functional teams (e.g., product managers, engineers).

  • Familiarity with accessibility standards and best practices (e.g., WCAG).

  • Experience with design systems and contributing to the development and maintenance of a design system.

  • Experience working on B2C products

  • Comfortable with experimentation and a track record of using data to inform design decisions

  • Ability to transfer skills e.g. by mentoring and coaching other designers
