As Lead Phlebotomy Technician, you will ensure the Inpatient Phlebotomy, Outpatient Lab and the Specimen Processing area maintain a continuous workflow. In this role, you will complete associated duties, such as drawing blood, transporting specimens and interpreting physician orders. Despite serving in a leadership role, you will still serve as a team member, showing exceptional customer service to facilitate a positive patient experience. All the while, you will continue developing your clinical skills within an exciting, inviting and supportive healthcare environment.  

A caregiver in this position works days from 4:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. + on-call requirements with every other weekend and holiday requirements.

A caregiver who excels in this role will:   

  • Handle internal and external customer service issues/concerns and initiate any necessary follow-up. 
  • Communicate to the staff all procedural changes and/or problems pertinent to the delivery of healthcare. 
  • In the absence of Supervisor or Team Leader, serve as the point person for problem resolution in a timely manner. 
  • Collect blood samples from all patients using venipuncture or capillary puncture techniques. 
  • Interpret physician orders for sample collection. 
  • Instruct patients in the proper technique for collecting various specimens. 
  • Process specimens and enter results for tests referred to reference laboratories. 
  • Deliver all samples collected to the Laboratory Accession Area for processing. 
  • Ensure safety and attend to any patient who faints or becomes ill. 
  • Coordinate orientation and training schedules. 
  • Assist Supervisor/Team Leader to ensure section is in compliance with accrediting and regulatory agency standards and safety guidelines. 
  • Assist in the training of Phlebotomy students and the orientation of new employees. 
  • Participate in and/or conduct in-services and continuing education programs. 
  • Attend workshops, seminars and lectures to keep current on new procedures and equipment. 
  • Maintain inventory system for Laboratory stock and Outpatient Drawing Areas. 

Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:   

  • High School Diploma or GED 
  • Two years of experience in a clinical laboratory 
  • Proficiency in infant and pediatric phlebotomy 
  • Demonstrated leadership and training experience 

Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:   

  • Associate’s Degree 
  • Phlebotomy Certification 
  • Hospital experience 

  

Physical Requirements:

  • Light lifting and carrying, under 15 lbs.
  • Use of fingers and both hands required.
  • Walking, standing and bending.
  • Ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously.
  • Ability to differentiate color, hue, saturation and tones.
  • Must have depth perception.
  • Ability to communicate and exchange accurate information.  In some positions, this includes receiving and recording information from patients at their bedside. 

Personal Protective Equipment:

  • Follows standard precautions using personal protective equipment as required.
