Responsible for the supervision of the oncology social workers and MSW interns through knowledge, application and oversight of the program elements and therapeutic techniques. Responsible for the development and coordination of psychosocial support and educational programs, survivorship programs, and complementary care programs. Provides individual and family psychosocial and psychotherapeutic supportive counseling designed to meet patient/family needs along the disease continuum including diagnosis, survivorship, terminal care and bereavement issues. Promotes and maintains the highest quality efficient services and ensures quality standards are met.The following is a summary of the major essential functions of this job. Provides support, guidance, supervision and directives to staff to ensure success with accomplishing job responsibilities
Plans for effective delivery of services, assigns work, incorporates changes as needed and maintains staff balance to ensure optimal quality of care and mission goals are met
Coordinates acceptance of MSW interns and manages interface with the university and ensures legal contractual issues are addressed and met
Plans for and evaluates effectiveness of support programs and participates in the overall programmatic strategic planning
Provides direct patient care, psychosocial interventions, crisis intervention, grief and bereavement counseling, problem solving, stress reduction, and healthy coping strategies in individual, family, and group settings
Ensures patient care is delivered in accordance with professional regulatory standards, to include Medicare, Medicaid, American College of Surgeons, Commission on Cancer, and Joint Commission
Other duties as assigned
The following qualifications, or equivalents, are the minimum requirements necessary to perform the essential functions of this job:
Master of Social Work (MSW) required
Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) in the State of North Carolina required
Oncology Social Work Certification required within 3 years of employment if not certified at time of hire
5 years of social work experience required with 3 years of oncology social work experience in a healthcare environment required
Experience in assessment, counseling, and end of life care preferred
Positive interpersonal skills
Excellent communication and problem solving and negotiation skills
Familiarity with assessing, counseling, discussing grief, loss, and end of life care
Critical thinking skills with ability to appropriately prioritize patient care, and prioritize other duties as assigned
Knowledgeable of Erickson's developmental model and be able to demonstrate age specific interventions
Knowledge and sensitivity to individuals’ psychosocial, spiritual, and cultural needs
Articulate orally and in written communication and able to make accommodation for literacy and comprehension levels
Ability to use own transportation to carry out duties away from the office
Visual acuity to see and read medical record documents, computer screens and computer printouts
Speech and auditory abilities to allow for effective communication
Ability to ambulate, climb stairs and push or pull wheelchair patients occasionally
Position may involve contact with blood or other potentially infectious material
