The primary purpose of this position is to lead workers who are performing as meteorological technicians providing meteorological products and services vital to the operational weather and resource protection support efforts to Air Force, Department of Defense (DoD), and/or other government/civilian customers.

Major Duties:

  • Leads meteorological technicians in the performance of weather forecasting related duties. Provides complex operational weather support to Air Force and other DoD/government/civilian users. Identifies, evaluates, and monitors significant weather developments, especially as they present potential impacts on critical flight operations. Provides weather briefings for local, transient, and other supported aircrews in person, by telephone, or by other means.

Examples of specialized experience includes: measuring meteorological phenomena with scientific equipment and instrumentation; observing and recording atmospheric characteristics, i.e., temperature, air movement, visibility, pressure, air density, cloud types; decoding, plotting, and systematically recording data related to the physical characteristics of the atmosphere, i.e., charts, diagrams, cross sections; collecting, analyzing, interpreting, adjusting, and verifying atmospheric and other meteorological data to confirm and improve accuracy and efficacy; as well as experience with utilizing meteorological methods, techniques, and practices to determine how local conditions, reports, and observations from various sources affect weather forecasts and whether action is needed to protect life and property; developing and operating data collection, verification, observation, and forecasting services and systems; and providing effective weather briefings for local, transient, and other supported systems. SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE FOR APPLICANTS WITH NO FEDERAL EXPERIENCE: Must have at least one (1) year of specialized experience at the GS-10 grade level or equivalent in other pay systems. FEDERAL TIME-IN-GRADE (TIG) REQUIREMENT FOR GENERAL SCHEDULE (GS) POSITIONS: Merit promotion applicants must meet applicable time-in-grade requirements to be considered eligible. One year at the GS-09 level is required to meet the time-in-grade requirements for the GS-11 level. TIG applies if you are in a current GS position or held a GS position within the previous 52 weeks. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs): Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas: Knowledge of meteorological methods, techniques, and practices, including advanced operations or approaches related to weather observing, forecasting, communications, meteorological equipment, and support procedures. Skill in using various computer software and various applications. Ability to measure meteorological phenomena with scientific equipment and instrumentation, and collect, analyze, interpret, adjust, and verify atmospheric or other meteorological data to confirm and improve its accuracy and effectiveness. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships using tact and diplomacy in interacting with individuals and unit representatives. Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing to prepare and present guidance products, briefings, coordinate planning efforts, and manage program activities. Ability to make timely decisions and select a course of action under high stress conditions associated with severe weather and emergency situations. PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.
