Role summary

Join athenahealth as a Lead Member of Technical Staff at the Manager level to lead design and delivery of reliable, scalable backend services that improve healthcare interoperability and operational outcomes. This position is based in Chennai, India and operates in a hybrid model (on-site and remote). The role requires 8 to 13 years of relevant experience and will report to the Engineering Manager

The team focuses on creating resilient microservices and cloud-native architectures that reliably move data across healthcare systems. Work is organized around small, cross-functional squads that prioritize iterative delivery, customer feedback, and measurable outcomes. Team members mentor peers, conduct design reviews, and contribute to technical strategy and operational best practices. Engineers on the team are empowered to propose technical improvements, own features end-to-end, and help maintain high standards for testing, observability, and security. Collaboration with product, clinical informatics, and platform teams ensures solutions align with user needs and regulatory expectations, while continuous learning is supported through knowledge sharing, brown-bags, and technical guilds.

Essential Job Responsibilities
 

  • Lead technical design and architecture for backend services using Java and Spring Boot, ensuring solutions are scalable and maintainable.
  • Manage and mentor engineering team members, providing technical guidance, performance feedback, and fostering professional growth.
  • Develop and maintain microservices deployed on AWS, leveraging cloud services for reliability, scalability, and cost efficiency.
  • Drive implementation of best practices in CI/CD, automated testing, monitoring, and incident response to ensure operational excellence.
  • Collaborate with product managers and architects to translate requirements into technical designs and delivery plans.
  • Analyze system performance and identify opportunities for optimization, capacity planning, and cost control.
  • Coordinate cross-team integration efforts and ensure APIs and data exchange patterns meet interoperability and security requirements.

Additional Job Responsibilities

  • Participate in code reviews and contribute to improving team coding standards and engineering practices.
  • Assist in recruiting and interviewing candidates for engineering roles to grow the team.
  • Contribute to technical roadmaps, documentation, and post-incident reviews to capture lessons learned.
  • Evaluate new tools, libraries, and frameworks to enhance team productivity and system robustness.
  • Support stakeholder demos and technical presentations to communicate design decisions and progress.
  • Help define and track key operational metrics and SLAs for services owned by the team.
  • Represent the team in architecture and platform working groups as needed.

Expected Education & Experience
 

  • 8 to 13 years of professional software engineering experience, with progressive leadership or technical management responsibilities.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • Strong proficiency in Java and Spring Boot for building enterprise-grade backend applications.
  • Hands-on experience building and operating microservices architectures.
  • Practical experience with AWS services (for example: EC2, ECS/EKS, Lambda, RDS, S3, CloudWatch) and cloud-native operational practices.
  • Experience with CI/CD pipelines, automated testing frameworks, containerization (Docker), and orchestration platforms.
  • Demonstrated ability to design for reliability, security, scalability, and observability in production environments.
  • Experience designing or integrating AI-enabled features into production systems.
  • Hands-on work with modern AI/ML or LLM platforms and tooling, including prompt design, model evaluation, and safe rollout practices.
