The Lead Software Engineer is responsible for advancing and optimizing the Batch, EDI, and Clearinghouse technology ecosystem supporting the eHub and HIT teams. This role leads complex engineering work, enhances system performance and reliability, and enables strategic capabilities that improve provider experience, operational efficiency, and compliance. The position blends hands-on engineering with technical leadership, driving innovation through automation, AI, and modern integration patterns.

The Lead Software Engineer possesses advanced hands-on engineering expertise and offers technical leadership, promptly addressing critical production issues and promoting ongoing improvements in transaction accuracy and timeliness. This position is integral to supporting the organization's modernization initiatives, including automation, AI-driven efficiencies, application and API optimization, and the reduction of technical and digital footprints. Furthermore, the role enhances enterprise security by improving TLM processes, addressing vulnerabilities, and removing hard-coded secrets across environments. The Lead Software Engineer also provides guidance to executives in developing functional strategies on significant, often segment-specific matters. The role requires independent judgment and decision-making on complex tasks, operating with minimal supervision and analyzing variable factors to determine optimal solutions.

Key Responsibilities

Technology Leadership & Solution Delivery

  • Lead the design, engineering, and optimization of Batch, EDI, and Clearinghouse capabilities that support business strategy and provider experience improvement.
  • Collaborate with cross‑functional teams (eHub, HIT, Operations, EIP, Architecture) to deliver scalable, secure, and compliant technology solutions.
  • Drive continuous modernization and simplification, improving performance, reliability, and technology lifecycle management.

EDI, Clearinghouse, and Batch Operations Excellence

  • Monitor, interpret, and report on KPIs related to EDI transactions, clearinghouse connectivity, and batch processing.
  • Identify performance gaps, systemic issues, and opportunities for optimization; recommend and implement improvements aligned with strategic objectives.
  • Lead resolution of complex transmission, connectivity, and processing issues with internal teams and external partners.

Automation, AI, and Productivity Enablement

  • Engineer and integrate automation, AI accelerators, and intelligent tooling to streamline workflows, reduce manual effort, and improve data quality.
  • Advance operational efficiency by supporting:
    • Application and API rationalization
    • Simplification of reporting and reduction of data redundancies
    • Reduction of digital/system footprint
  • Promote the adoption of modern engineering, integration, and DevOps practices.

Security, Compliance & Engineering Quality

  • Support and improve technology lifecycle management (patching, upgrades, decommissioning, modernization).
  • Partner with security teams to identify, respond to, and remediate vulnerabilities in a timely manner.
  • Drive secure engineering practices, including the elimination of hard‑coded secrets and adoption of enterprise secret‑management solutions.

Collaboration, Mentorship & Technical Guidance

  • Serve as a subject matter expert for EDI, batch, and clearinghouse technologies.
  • Mentor engineers, guide technical decision‑making, and promote engineering best practices.
  • Influence architectural approaches and help shape integration strategies for future-state capabilities.

Required Qualifications

  • 5–7+ years of experience in integration engineering, systems engineering, or similar technical roles.
  • Strong technical expertise in EDI (X12), clearinghouse transactions, and batch processing architectures.
  • Demonstrated ability to engineer and optimize large-scale transactional systems.
  • Hands-on experience with automation, scripting, and workflow orchestration.
  • Understanding of AI/ML or intelligent automation tools (e.g., NLP, process automation, Azure AI, Claude code, GitHub Copilot).
  • Experience with secure engineering practices, vulnerability remediation, or secret‑management tooling.
  • Must be willing to work in a Hybrid work structure within Louisville, Kentucky or Nashville, Tennessee

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with Azure or other cloud platforms.
  • Familiarity with modern integration platforms (Apigee, Edifecs, Azure Integration Services).
  • Knowledge of DevOps practices, CI/CD pipelines, and Infrastructure-as-Code.
  • Healthcare or regulated industry experience.

Pay Range

The compensation range below reflects a good faith estimate of starting base pay for full time (40 hours per week) employment at the time of posting. The pay range may be higher or lower based on geographic location and individual pay will vary based on demonstrated job related skills, knowledge, experience, education, certifications, etc.


 

$129,300 - $177,800 per year


 

This job is eligible for a bonus incentive plan. This incentive opportunity is based upon company and/or individual performance.
