Lead Data Engineer

The Lead Data Engineer will drive cross-functional data quality, governance, and testing initiatives to support enterprise data platform modernization. This role will collaborate closely with the Data Governance Program Office (DGPO), architecture, product, and quality engineering teams to ensure robust data management, environment stability, and consistent testing practices across all delivery phases.

This position will also support the leadership of assigned teams by managing resource planning, allocations, and tracking. This role will serve as a key partner in prioritizing work and resource needs across initiatives, and will contribute to technical leadership for Medicaid/Medicare projects. The position is responsible for staying informed on project technical requirements, leading design and design reviews, supporting Agile planning, and coordinating test automation and documentation activities.

Serve as a key liaison with the DGPO to implement and operationalize data governance strategies, including data retention, access policies, and stewardship frameworks. Lead enablement of new data capabilities (e.g., Databricks, Snowflake, Adobe Experience Platform, AI) by ensuring readiness and alignment with architectural best practices across environments. Develop and enforce standardized testing governance across programs, supporting enterprise agility, risk mitigation, and reliability.

Primary Responsibilities: 

  • Drive Data Governance Alignment: Collaborate with DGPO analysts to execute enterprise data strategy initiatives, including metadata management, data lineage documentation, and cataloging. 

  • Manage Test Strategy and Execution: Define and enforce standardized testing frameworks across SIT, UAT, regression, and failover phases. Partner with Quality Engineering and Release Train Engineers (RTEs) to ensure traceability and comprehensive reporting. 

  • Support Pre-Development Readiness: Work with architecture and product teams to validate testability in design phases, ensuring data source inventories and performance assumptions are documented prior to development. 

  • Define processes and templates for sensitive data testing across Unity Catalog, Snowflake, and on-premise environments. 

  • Create templates for readiness and reporting of dependent tables for downstream testing, including external team dependencies. 

  • Ensure availability of test data in cloud environments in advance of testing cycles. 

  • Define and coordinate the business sign-off process, including testing and acceptance criteria. 

Additional Responsibilities: 

  • Decide when lower environments meet entry/exit criteria for testing phases, directly impacting the quality and timing of production releases and mitigating deployment risks. 

  • Collaborate with DGPO and Enterprise Architecture to define and enforce data access controls, minimizing data sprawl, ensuring compliance, and protecting sensitive information. 

  • Determine which defects require immediate escalation and which can be deferred, influencing system stability, stakeholder satisfaction, and continuous improvement. 

  • Manage resource planning, allocations, and tracking assigned teams. 

  • Assist leadership in prioritization of resource needs and best-fit assignments across  initiatives. 

  • Lead and contribute to solutions design and design review activities. 

  • Oversee documentation practices, ensuring full documentation of table dependencies (internal and external), and support documentation.

Required Qualifications 

  • Minimum of 8 years of progressive technical leadership experience 

  • Experience with quality and testing processes, and data governance 

  • Experience collaborating with architecture, technical leads, test engineering, management, and business to establish and ensure governance of data quality and adoption of best testing practices 

  • Experience with enterprise data engineering in Databricks or Oracle    

Preferred Qualifications  

  • Experience in the medical insurance domain 

Work-At-Home Requirements

  • Associates who live and work from Home in the state of California, Illinois, Montana, or South Dakota will be provided a bi-weekly payment for their internet expense.

  • Humana will provide Home or Hybrid Home/Office associates with telephone equipment appropriate to meet the business requirements for their position/job.

  • Work from a dedicated space lacking ongoing interruptions to protect member PHI / HIPAA information

Travel: While this is a remote position, occasional travel to Humana's offices for training or meetings may be required.

Pay Range

The compensation range below reflects a good faith estimate of starting base pay for full time (40 hours per week) employment at the time of posting. The pay range may be higher or lower based on geographic location and individual pay will vary based on demonstrated job related skills, knowledge, experience, education, certifications, etc.


 

$129,300 - $177,800 per year


 

This job is eligible for a bonus incentive plan. This incentive opportunity is based upon company and/or individual performance.
