The Operations and Client Services team delivers strategic, enterprise scale software engineering solutions across a diverse portfolio of applications supporting internal stakeholders and the bank’s clients. As part of Corporate Bank Technology, the team operates within a strong engineering culture focused on technical excellence, continuous improvement, and talent development across front to back domains.

This VP level Engineering Manager role holds end to end accountability for engineering outcomes, combining senior people leadership, technical governance, and delivery ownership. The role sets clear engineering direction, builds and leads high performing teams, drives architectural and technology decisions, and remains sufficiently hands on to assure software quality, resilience, and sustainable delivery.

Your key responsibilities

  • Lead data engineering delivery for one or more squads - Own delivery of scalable, reliable data pipelines and data products, setting technical direction and enforcing engineering standards while remaining hands‑on where required (design, reviews, complex implementations)
  • Define and uphold data architecture and modelling standards - Lead logical and physical data modelling, schema evolution, and data design decisions across analytical and operational data stores, ensuring consistency, performance, and downstream usability
  • Build and operate cloud‑native data pipelines - Design, implement, and maintain batch and streaming pipelines on cloud platforms, ensuring robustness, observability, cost awareness, and alignment with approved platform and architecture standards
  • Embed data quality, lineage, and governance by design - Ensure data quality controls, metadata, lineage, and access controls are built into pipelines and datasets, supporting auditability, regulatory requirements, and trusted data consumption
  • Collaborate across data science, engineering, and platform teams - Act as a technical bridge between data engineers, data scientists, application teams, and platform owners, translating analytical needs into scalable data solutions and resolving cross‑domain dependencies
  • Drive engineering excellence and continuous improvement - Promote best practices in testing, CI/CD for data pipelines, operational readiness, and responsible use of AI‑assisted tooling, continuously improving reliability, maintainability, and developer productivity

Your skills and experience

  • Senior engineering leadership with hands on credibility - Proven experience leading multiple engineering teams, setting technical direction, and remaining sufficiently hands on to assure design quality, secure coding practices, resilience, and sustainable delivery at enterprise scale
  • Strong full stack and platform awareness - Expert level Java experience with a solid appreciation of adjacent technologies, including Python based data pipelines and modern frontend stacks (React, TypeScript), enabling effective end to end technical oversight
  • Modern cloud native and microservices engineering - Deep experience delivering APIs and services in microservices architectures on cloud infrastructure, with strong understanding of CI/CD, containerisation, runtime operations, and production support expectations
  • Data platform and database breadth - Strong understanding of relational and NoSQL database technologies, including schema design, query optimisation, and data access patterns, with the ability to guide teams on fit for purpose data storage decisions
  • Knowledge graph and semantic data technologies - Working knowledge of knowledge graph concepts and graph databases, including entity modelling, relationships, and semantic layers, and how these are applied to improve data discovery, lineage, and cross domain analytics.
  • Vector databases and AI enabled data architectures - Awareness of vector database technologies and similarity search patterns, and their use in AI enabled applications (e.g. semantic search, retrieval augmented generation), with the ability to guide teams on responsible and scalable adoption.
