Job SummaryThe Lead Custodian, under general supervision, may be assigned to any one of several positions to include: patient area cleaner, non-patient area cleaner, trash technician, special care unit cleaner, floor care, and/or others. Also assists in hands-on training of new staff and re-training of existing staff. Acts in a supervisory role in the absence of the supervisor or manager. Performs huddles in absence of supervisor or manager. Ensures coverage of staff assignments for the shift and may also carry department phone to dispatch service requests. Periodically monitors bed board to ensure patient throughput. This position may also perform other cleaning duties to maintain a clean and aseptic environment throughout the hospital/clinics.
Essential Functions:
- Performs Lead Custodian duties by functioning as a work leader assisting custodial staff with supply/equipment, and training, completes work orders, inspections and monitoring of work areas, and work schedules, assures all work completed meets or exceeds cleaning expectations as defined in the EVS Standards for Cleanliness. Keeps record of progress on work completed. (25%)
- Assists custodial staff and performs daily cleaning, sanitizing, and servicing of assigned work area as per schedules and procedures by use of appropriate disinfectant cleaners, chemicals and equipment - consisting of sweeping, dust mopping, wet mopping, vacuuming, rest room cleaning, floor care projects and other related duties as required. (25%)
- Performs daily detail cleaning of assigned area as per schedules and procedures by use of appropriate disinfectant cleaners, chemicals and equipment - consisting of washing walls, doors, frames, sills, windows, baseboards, fixtures, furniture, ceilings, vents and light fixtures. (25%)
- Performs and coordinates project floor work consisting of buffing, scrubbing, stripping, waxing and sealing of hard floor surfaces and bonnet cleaning, spot cleaning, shampooing and extracting of carpeted floors by use of appropriate cleaning chemicals and equipment. (10%)
- Collects and disposes of trash and bio-hazard waste by properly containing and transporting to proper disposal locations. Cleans and services equipment, maintains janitorial closet and carts, supplies stock levels and chemical labeling requirements. (10%)
- Monitors building security and safety by performing such tasks as locking doors after operating hours. Notifies supervisor concerning the need for work orders related to building and equipment repair. (5%)
Education:
- No High School Diploma and/or No GED Required
Work Experience:
- 4-6 years 5 years of custodian experience in Health Care Required or
- 4-6 years 5 years of experience at Denver Health with passing competencies
Licenses:
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Knowledge of the kind of tools and equipment needed to do a job. Knowledge of safety hazards and necessary safety precautions sufficient to be able to establish a safety work environment. Knowledge of chemicals and equipment used to clean surface areas sufficient to be able to maintain a clean and orderly work area. Knowledge of proper cleaning methods.
- Knowledge of and/or ability to learn occasional hazards and safety precautions. Skill in understanding and following oral, illustrated, written or demonstrated instructions. Ability to communicate effectively. Ability to work within Health Department standards.
- Command of English strongly preferred. Formal or informal education or training which ensures the ability to read and write at a level necessary for successful job performance.
