About the team
As Nu continues its global expansion and continues innovating, the risk landscape becomes increasingly complex. While Nubank has developed a strong Risk structure within the 2nd Line of Defence, we are looking to continue strengthening our risk maturity in the 1st Line. The BCO team was therefore created to directly support the various Business Units of Nubank with managing their risks in a proactive manner, with the assumption that the 2nd and 3rd lines of defense do not exist.
This team is also continuously evolving, and BCOs are expected to directly contribute to the development of the BCO structure, by bringing their ideas to the table, and help create "Best in Class" Risk Management in the 1st line of Defense.
About the role
To support the Business Units in achieving their objectives, the BCOs will be expected to balance risk and business priorities. By being hands-on, they will lead by example and support the teams, always keeping in mind the vision that we have established: "To empower the 1st line Nubankers to become proactive Risk Owners, ensuring adherence to standards and protecting the interests of the company and stakeholders".
To do so, the BCOs follow 3 pillars of focus:
- Processes & Internal Controls: Ensuring that our functions/BUs are managing their risks through thorough understanding of their processes and its control environment, but also by identifying improvement opportunities in how we work. This will in turn drive more efficiency with our various partners across the various lines of Defense and showcase increased maturity.
- Governance, Risk & Compliance: Ensuring that our functions/BUs are in line with internal and external regulatory and risk requirements. This showcases strong alignment with the various functions leading our internal governance allowing us to focus with more certainty on product and features development.
- Measuring & Reporting: Ensuring that BCOs have developed appropriate KPIs to facilitate the monitoring of the programs above and validating that functions/BUs are delivering as per the established goals.
As a BCO you will
- Act as the bridge between local Compliance, Product teams, and global units to ensure consistent interpretation and implementation of market-specific regulatory obligations.
- Facilitate risk identification, control assessments, and documentation for market-specific processes in alignment with enterprise methodology.
- Establish and govern Key Risk Indicators (KRIs), ensuring local process owners define measurable thresholds aligned with risk appetite.
- Promote and sustain first-line ownership of risks and controls, providing oversight and challenge without taking over direct ownership.
- Manage the local control environment for financial reporting and act as the primary contact for SOX and KPMG audits.
- Identify market-critical processes and ensure recovery plans (BIAs) are documented, tested, and aligned with regulatory expectations.
- Oversee the documentation and remediation of local control gaps, ensuring timely resolution and escalation of systemic issues to global units.
- Support the pre-risk assessment of new products and features (NP&F)
- Centralize the coordination of high-impact incidents, ensuring proper classification, regulatory notification, and root cause remediation.
