About the Role/Team

The Payments Settlements (PS) department is seeking a data-oriented Lead Business Analyst to uplift, modernise and maintain the data warehouse supporting critical payments systems—including the Reserve Bank Information and Transfer System (RITS), the Fast Settlement Service (FSS), and SWIFT interbank payment systems.

You will be a key member of the Business Delivery section and will work as an important bridge between business and technology, ensuring requirements are clearly defined and aligned for the successful delivery of the projects that support/ enhance the Australian payments system. This role will initially sit with the FSS Next Program, a major 3–5‑year transformation initiative that will enhance real‑time, 24/7 settlement capabilities for the New Payments Platform (NPP), which processes an average of 3.5 million payments per day, worth $4 billion. In this program, you will evaluate various data platform options, contribute to business case development, and help deliver a new technology solution capable of managing large‑scale transactional datasets.

What you will do

  • Engage with business owners, SMEs and technical teams to elicit, interpret and document business requirements

  • Identify and map data assets & data products, end-to-end processes, data lineage, ownership and map business workflows to data flows.

  • Facilitate structured workshops for discovery, ideation and requirements gathering for the new data platform.

  • Collaborate with data analysts, architects, developers and design teams to convert business needs into functional specifications for scalable data warehouse and technology solutions.

  • Support data modelling and data preparation for downstream analytics

  • Create and maintain comprehensive documentation, including user stories for Agile delivery.

  • Prepare and present high-quality decision support materials, including options and trade-off analysis, to senior leadership and executive stakeholders

  • Identify risks, interdependencies, and cross-functional impacts across business and technology domains

  • Manage requirement changes using structured change‑control processes and maintain traceability.

  • Contribute to change‑management planning and execution.

  • Contribute to the enhancement of business analysis practice, tools, and templates, and mentor junior analysts.

Your background

To be successful in this critical role you will possess:

  • Advanced knowledge of business analysis methods, elicitation techniques and documentation standards

  • Strong proficiency with JIRA, Confluence, Azure DevOps or similar tools

  • Experience in data platforms, data‑transformation or modernisation programs

  • Solid understanding of data assets, data products, data lineage and transformation techniques

  • Experience with structured and semi‑structured datasets and data engineering delivery practices

  • Strong process mapping and workflow design skills

  • Deep knowledge of data warehouse architecture, ETL processes and data modelling

  • A “technical BA” mindset, comfortable working with database schemas and ERDs

  • Strong SQL skills for data analysis, data mapping, extraction and profiling

  • Excellent analytical, multi-tasking, organizational and stakeholder management skills.

  • Demonstrated experience as a Business Analyst in data-centric environments or projects, with a strong focus on data warehousing, analytics, and/or enterprise transformation initiatives

  • A professional certification in business analysis such as IIBA CBAP would be highly regarded.
