This role is responsible for executing the technical work that connects emerging risk, market intelligence, and stress and scenario work with Markel’s business planning and global capital modeling. The goal is to make risk foresight routine, reliable, and decision-ready.

Key Responsibilities

  • Stress & Scenario Analysis: Design, parameterize, and execute stress scenarios, parameterizing scenarios that feed into both the ORSA (Markel Group and Markel Insurance) and CISSA (Bermuda) filings.

  • Risk Appetite: Help develop risk tolerances supporting Markel’s risk appetite, and implement relevant Key Risk Indicators (KRIs) to monitor exposure against appetite.

  • Leadership Input: Support the Director in designing and facilitating scenario workshops, interviews, surveys and tabletop exercises with underwriting and other leaders across the organization.

  • Cross-Functional Engagement: Partner with Underwriting, Actuarial, Finance, and Capital Modeling teams to integrate risk intelligence into portfolio management, business planning, and decision-making.

  • Agile Project Execution: Deliver on quarterly milestones in a fast-paced environment, managing competing priorities to ensure rapid incident response and "decision-ready" briefs for senior leaders.

Required Skills & Experience

  • Insurance Background: 5+ years of experience in insurance risk, actuarial, or strategy, or other analytical roles.

  • Exceptional Communication: A track record of producing high-caliber, concise written materials for executive forums; the ability to translate technical uncertainty into clear business narratives.

  • Attention to Detail: Meticulous approach to quality control, ensuring that exposure data is accurate and that "lead time" from signal to approved action is minimized.

  • Technical Proficiency: Skilled in analytics (e.g., Excel, SQL, Python), Powerpoint, and visualization tools (e.g., Tableau, Power BI).

  • Project Management & Pace: Proven ability to manage complex, multi-stakeholder information gathering while meeting rigorous deadlines in a high-volume environment.

Education & Certification

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in a quantitative or risk-related discipline (Finance, Economics, Mathematics, etc.) is required.
