Job Description Summary:

Under direct supervision, this position supports maintenance and care across regional facilities, including athletic fields, urban parks, and other city-managed outdoor spaces. Team members help keep parks, fields, and public areas safe, clean, and welcoming for community use. Daily tasks may include mowing, weeding, raking, trash pickup, field preparation, basic repairs, and other maintenance work. Assignments are provided by park supervisors and field staff. The role runs through the summer and may vary based on weather and operational needs.

The Parks and Recreation department is seeking individuals to work in Ongoing/Varied and Seasonal roles. We will be hiring multiple employees based on our programs and hours of operation. Please keep in mind that the city’s benefit package offer will differ based upon work hours and the duration of the assignment you accept.

• Ongoing/Varied: Work less than 20 hours/week with no planned end date to work. No medical, dental, or vision insurance is available, but employees receive benefits including sick time-off, wellness program, EcoPass for transit, recreation pass, and retirement plans.

• Seasonal Max: March – September. Work six (6) to 11 months, averaging more than 30 hours/week. Medical insurance is offered, but not dental or vision insurance. Other benefits received include sick time-off, wellness program, EcoPass for transit, recreation pass, and retirement plans.

• Seasonal Traditional: May – September. Work less than six (6) months, averaging more than 30 hours/week. No medical, dental, or vision insurance is available, but employees receive benefits including sick time-off, wellness program, EcoPass for transit, recreation pass, and retirement plans.

• Seasonal Limited Hours: March – September. Work less than 11 months, averaging less than 30 hours/week. No medical, dental, or vision insurance is offered, but employees receive benefits including sick time-off, wellness program, EcoPass for transit, recreation pass, and retirement plans.

Job Description:

URBAN PARKS

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPOSIBILITIES

  • Assists in the cleaning and maintenance of properties and parks.

  • Prepares areas for rentals and events. 

  • Assists in turf maintenance

  • Cleans and maintains hardscapes. 

  • Repairs and removes vandalism. 

  • Assists in maintaining horticulture. 

  • Removes waste and litter. 

  • Assists in snow removal as needed. 

  • Assists in trail work.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Ability to perform a wide range of physical and manual tasks in and outdoor environment under a variety of weather conditions. 

  • Ability to evaluate conditions in assigned area and make judgments related to safety. 

  • Ability to provide excellent customer service. 

  • Must be 18 years of age or older. 

  • Valid Driver's License and ability to maintain acceptable motor vehicle record.

  • Have and maintain acceptable background information, including criminal conviction history. 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS 

  • Skills in effective interpersonal communication, including conflict resolution..

  • Ability to keep accurate records, organize information, supplies and equipment, and follow established procedures. 

  • Ability to operate a variety of hand and power tools. 

  • Ability to operate riding mowers, tractors, truck and trailers, and other landscape equipment. 

  • Ability to provide information and instruction to individuals and groups. 

  • Ability to work alone under general supervision 

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE 

  • High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent

  • Zero to one (0-1) years of customer service experience.

WORKING CONDITIONS AND REQUIREMENTS

  • Physical and mental effort: Ability to perform a wide range of strenuous physical and manual tasks in an outdoor environment. Physical ability to stand, walk, and kneel. Able to use a variety of long handled, manual, and power tools; and to operate equipment while working in and around moving traffic. Upper body strength to lift up to 40 pounds on a daily basis and over 75 pounds on an occasional basis. Sufficient clarity of speech and hearing or other communication capabilities that permits the employee to communicate effectively in person.

  • Work Environment: Frequently work outside with exposure to a variety of weather conditions. Works in a setting subject to continuous interruptions and background noises. Ability to work hours that are flexible and include weekends and evenings. 

  • Machines and Equipment Used: A variety of long-handled tools, including shovels, rakes, brooms, and weed whips, blowers, etc. Also, pick-up truck, golf cart, and various utility vehicles.
