Job Summary: This position performs a variety of laborer duties such as setting up and arranging furniture; moving furniture, supplies, boxes, and construction materials; loading and unloading trucks; operating floor care equipment; and performing othercleaning and maintenance tasks. Performs general flooring maintenance, snow removal duties and other assigned projects within the Central Virginia Veterans Healthcare System (CVHCS).

Major Duties:

  • The incumbent provides set-up and support for furniture relocation following maintenance activities. Sets up dining areas, meeting rooms, auditoriums, classrooms, etc., in various configurations following cleaning events. Collects all wet waste material from various locations within buildings and relines all wet waste containers and disposes of all wet waste materials. Cleans recycling containers as necessary. Operates gas or battery powered material handling equipment, carts, golf carts or similar vehicles for general transportation of self and other laborers to and from various duty sites to load, stack and collect waste and recycle material from various locations throughout the campus. Performs normal user preservation on mechanical carts including fueling, washing, and checking oil, fluid levels, and tire pressures. Operates powered equipment including motorized carts, riding floor scrubber/burnishers, power washers, snow blowers, salt spreaders, and a ride-on powered vacuum to pick up trash, debris, and cigarette butts. Performs duties and operates equipment in a safe manner, utilizing safety practices and procedures, and complying with established safety rules and regulations. Works with other employees performing various special project that require operating specialized equipment to maintain all types of installed facility flooring especially in areas that require constant attention. Uses weight-handling equipment including fork-lifts and pallet jacks and moves, supplies, equipment, and bulk items to and from a warehouse or staging area. Operates snow removal equipment to help remove snow and ice from entrances, walkways, steps, ramps and parking areas by hand shoveling when required. Applies sand or ice melting materials to areas using hand or push-type spreaders. Operates other equipment including high pressure (3200 psi) washer to clean entrances, buildings, equipment, and other various areas. Moves furniture and office equipment as necessary to accomplish work. Work Schedule: 3:30PM TO Midnight, Various Days Off Position Description Title/PD#: Laborer/PD01449A Physical Requirements: This position exerts heavy physical laboring in performing tasks such as lifting and moving heavy objects, operating power equipment, pushing wheelbarrows and spreaders, shoveling and objects weighing over 50 pounds on a regular basis, and may move items that may weigh mroe than 80lbs. Must be able to stand, stoop, bend, kneel and climb in the performance of duties. Must be capable of operating powered equipment, move heavily loaded carts. Working Conditions: The incumbent's work is performed mainly indoors but occasionally outside in extremem heat, cold and rainy weather. Work is also performed in dirty, dusty and wet locations. The incumbent must observe all safety regulations to protect themselves and others. Personal protective equipment is used a safety measures for specific jobs and equipment.
