Labor and Delivery Lead Resource Nurse 7p-7a

Under the general supervision of the Labor and Delivery Nurse Manager, the Lead Resource Nurse serves as an experienced clinician and leader who demonstrates strong clinical judgment, effective communication, and collaborative practice. The Lead Resource Nurse provides oversight of the Resource Nurse role and supports daily unit operations to ensure safe, efficient, and patient‑centered care.

Education:

Associate degree from an accredited School of Nursing required; Bachelor’s degree required within 3 years of start date.

Experience:

  • 5 years current Charge Nurse Experience
  • 7 years Labor and Delivery Experience
  • 3 years of Triage and Antepartum Experience
  • Previous leadership experience preferred

Licensure & Certification:

  • Current registration with the Maryland State Board of Examiners of Nurses as a Registered Nurse
  • Healthcare Provider CPR and NRP
  • Current certification in Inpatient Obstetrics or Fetal Monitoring

Skills:

  • Proficient in labor and delivery clinical skills including, but not limited to, fetal monitoring assessment, IV and phlebotomy, familiar with hospital and unit policies
  • Proficiency in developing nursing plan of care, implementing effective nursing care, and evaluating outcome of nursing intervention
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Effective planning and organizational skills in order to effectively manage multiple priorities simultaneously
  • Proven ability to be flexible, adapt to changing conditions, and prioritize patient care and unit needs.
  • Strong analytical skills to identify and develop solutions to administrative, operational, and patient care problems
  • Effective skills in use of computer programs
  • Advanced skill in managing operational flow and unit activities for the overall benefit and smooth operation of the unit

  • Able to delegate assignments and provide direction to nursing personnel
  • Demonstrated ability to coach, mentor, develop, and issue corrective action to staff as appropriate with guidance from a Clinical Nurse Manager
  • Ability to complete performance management process
  • Ability to perform in Charge, Triage, Antepartum, or Resource role as needed

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

Utilization of Nursing Process

Assessment.

  • Compiles database and formulates nursing diagnosis.
  • Utilizes physical assessment and interviewing techniques.
  • Anticipates need for intervention by other disciplines.
  • Determines priorities for patient care needs or problems.
  • Reassesses the patient as indicated by changes in condition and/ or response to treatment(s)

Planning.

  • Initiates and updates a written nursing plan of care for patients by incorporating scientific and psychosocial principles that support the nursing diagnosis.
  • Incorporates information obtained from nursing care planning conferences into written nursing plan of care.
  • Coordinates patient, family, significant other, and health team members in the planning of hospital and post-discharge care.

Implementation

  • Performs clinical nursing skills independently.
  • Administers medications, IV therapy and treatments appropriately and accurately.
  • Initiates appropriate emergency procedures as necessary.
  • Appropriately delegates and coordinates the duties of ancillary personnel.
  • Communicates the patient's status and plan of care through written documentation in the patient's medical record.
  • Verbally communicates the patient's status to physicians, nurses and other health care professionals.
  • Communicates in a therapeutic manner with the patient, family and visitors.
  • Applies teaching/learning principles in education of patient and family.

Patient Care Coordination

  • Manage daily patient assignment by appropriately setting priorities.
  • Delegates responsibility appropriately and monitors the nursing care delivered to patients by ancillary personnel.
  • Coordinates patient activities with other disciplines.

Teaching and Quality Improvement

  • Participates in 1 or more unit-based committees.
  • Participates in clinical monitoring at the unit level.
  • Maintains open and frequent communication with other members of the Labor and Delivery leadership team and escalates concerns appropriately.
  • Assist the Charge Nurse to proactively address staff, patient, and family concerns in a timely manner, coordinating appropriate services and resources to resolve issues effectively while ensuring follow‑up communication and service recovery when necessary.
  • Contributes to workflow improvements and assists with data analysis.
  • Develops, documents and implements Patient Teaching and Discharge Planning Record.

Leadership

  • Provides leadership and oversight for scheduling and operational practice of the Resource Nurse role, working collaboratively with the Clinical Unit Manager to ensure consistency, effectiveness, and appropriate staffing coverage.
  • Contributes to the development, refinement, and standardization of the Resource Nurse role across the unit.
  • Serves as the shift resource for policy interpretation and decision‑making, while monitoring and reviewing the work performance of assigned shift staff.
  • Supports and reinforces a positive, engaged, and collaborative unit culture by modeling professional behavior and promoting team cohesion.
  • Provides mentorship and support to staff, promoting skill development, professional growth, and ongoing engagement in their practice.

Pay Range

$35.32 - $60.60

Final salary offer will be based on the candidate's qualifications, education, experience and alignment with our organizational needs.
