Conducts thorough analyses and evaluates a variety of lab procedures, tests, and assays. Provides analytical results to production for various chemical processes. Assists Quality Control Management team in projects, studies, evaluations, and improvements to the department. Contributes to training procedure for new employees in accordance with the standard operating procedures. Carries out cleaning, maintenance, and minor repair work as necessary. Works a twelve-hour rotating day shift and is assigned designated relief for PTO coverage.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Analyze routine production, warehouse, and incoming raw material samples in accordance with safety protocols and laboratory procedures.
- Interpret, evaluate, and report analytical results to support production operations and product quality.
- Operate, start up, shut down, calibrate, validate, and perform routine maintenance on laboratory instrumentation.
- Troubleshoot equipment and process issues using the Plan-Do-Check-Act methodology in collaboration with technical, supervisory, and operations personnel.
- Perform data entry and maintain accurate laboratory records using systems such as Excel, SAP, and electronic logbooks.
- Follow and review Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), assist in maintaining ISO documentation, and recommend updates or improvements when required.
- Monitor laboratory conditions through routine inspections, record instrument readings and process data, and identify potential leaks, hazards, or abnormal conditions.
- Maintain laboratory supplies and storeroom inventory, ensuring proper minimum and maximum stock levels.
- Support equipment adjustments, maintenance preparation, and restoration to service, including TPM tagging and Lock-Out/Tag-Out procedures.
- Assist external vendors and personnel working in the laboratory area as needed.
- Handle materials and equipment safely, including lifting, carrying, and moving items within or near the laboratory.
- Maintain housekeeping standards to ensure a clean, organized, and safe laboratory environment.
- Participate in safety and continuous improvement initiatives, including the BBS program, safety observations, toolbox meetings, and emergency response procedures.
- Act as an area owner by completing CLIs, conducting monthly audits, and supporting the CX TPM program.
- Perform additional duties as assigned in accordance with operational and safety requirements.
STRATEGIC FOCUS
- Meet regulatory requirements assigned to this position including ADEM, OSHA, and DOT regulations.
- Continue to learn and abide by requirements of ISO9001/RC14001/ISO50001 - Learn and master the SAP system and any associated LIMS
- Become familiar with all product lines and analytical requirements, including learning, and mastering all aspects of instrumentation and methodology in wet and instrument labs.
- Place emphasis on safety, environmental, quality and productivity.
- Continuously improve laboratory processes through application of Lean Manufacturing Principles, making practical recommendations on the quality requirements of the Quality Control Department.
- Satisfactory completion of all defined Evonik, Mobile Site, and CX specified OJT requirements and certifications for laboratory technician classification. Membership on Site Emergency Response Team is optional.
REQUIREMENTS
- BS degree in a science related field is required. Previous experience in a laboratory environment is desired but not required.
- Use of electronic calculator, personal computer, MS Office, two-way radio, explosion meter, telephone, personal HCN detector, forklift, pallet jack, chocks, hand tools, chemical suit, fire retardant suit, self-contained breathing apparatus, ladder, pH meter, chain pulley, drum dolly, breathing air equipment may be required.
- Previous experience with equipment and laboratory processes including the operation of various analytical instrumentations, such as GC, GCMS, FTIR, NIR, viscometers and titrators is preferred
- Decision making authority encompasses the full range of requirements to ensure continued protection of personnel safety, health and the environment.
- The incumbent interfaces with the Safety, Environmental, Production, Logistics, Purchasing, and Maintenance Departments.
- Functional support and guidance are provided by the Lab Manager and other members of CX QC Management.
- Sources of information are various plant and company manuals, instrument manuals and other technical resource material.
