Performs a variety of routine procedures with the collection, receiving and/or processing of laboratory requisitions and specimens, the performance of technical procedures involving technical and data entry duties.

Major Responsibilities:

General:

  • Receives specimens from couriers and checks manifests to verify appropriate count.
  • Logs and assigns accession numbers to specimens and requisitions received.
  • Sorts and triages requisitions and specimens to appropriate workstation; completes and files manifests.
  • Answers telephones and communicates pertinent information.  Send specimens and carriers to various sites using pneumatic tube or dumbwaiter.  Performs minor troubleshooting of pneumatic tube through computer.
  • Registers patients for a variety of laboratory procedures including sweat testing and specimen collection.
  • Processes specimens including centrifugation, pour-off, aliquoting, labeling.
  • Performs a variety of routine duties to assist in laboratory processes, such as, preparing reagents and stains, preparing slides and specimens, disposal of biohazardous waste, collecting occasional specimens from outreach patients at Biotech I, etc.
  • Performs assigned duties to ensure, an adequate inventory of supplies for assigned area. Monitors inventory levels and stores equipment and supplies in a neat and orderly manner. 
  • May place orders for supplies when needed.
  • Maintains accurate records of processes performed, using manual and computer-based systems.  Communicates with lead or supervisory personnel regarding unusual problems.
  • Complies with all laboratory quality, health and safety policies, regulations and requirements and with established departmental policies, procedures and objectives. 
  • Attends variety of meetings, conferences, seminars as required or directed.
  • Performs other similar and related laboratory duties in assigned area as required or directed for which he or she has documented competencies.

Lab Registration:

  • Registers outreach specimens received from clients into LIS.  Creates registration for outreach specimens in Hospital Admission/Discharge/Transfer (ADT) system.
  • Searches master patient index (MPI) and IDX for appropriate patient demographic information.  Merges dates of services as warranted. Corrects error log reports. 
  • Inputs ICD 9 codes or diagnosis information provided by physician’s offices, clinics, and other health care organization into abstract module of the Meditech Billing Accounts Receivable system.

Arterial Blood Gases:

  • Performs routine and automated technical procedures and required quality control procedures such as arterial blood gases under supervision; cleans and prepares glassware for analytical testing.
  • Logs results into Laboratory Information System (LIS), enters blood gas data and other patient findings for interpretation and transmits results to requesting department, checks results for accuracy based upon pre-defined laboratory criteria.
  • Maintains equipment during shift including necessary calibration and cleaning to assure accurate results; performs minor repairs as necessary.  Notifies supervisor of any equipment failures requiring service.

Cytogenetics:

  • Autoclaves and washes glassware.
  • Enters patient information as well as laboratory findings, and results into the cytogenetics database.
  • Processes all Alpha Feto Protein (AFP) profile samples, including accessioning, registration, centrifugation, packaging, resulting, copying and mailing.

Microbiology:

  • Plants specimens on correct media and incubate them properly.

Send Outs:

  • Prepares specimens to be sent to referral laboratories; obtains proper detailed information pertaining to sample requirements such as: packaging, test codes, requesting physician, appropriate specimen type and volume needed, test code, shipping information.  
  • Completes necessary requisitions and stores specimens as required.
  • Reviews Outstanding Specimen Logs (OSR) to assure all referral tests have been obtained.  Communicates with lead or supervisory personnel regarding any unusual problems.
  • Reviews monthly statements from referral laboratories for appropriateness and accuracy of patient/test/billing.

License/Certification/Education:
Required:

  • High School graduate.

Experience/Skills:
Required:

  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in clinical laboratory or hospital registration area.
  • Familiarity with data entry and/or word processor and medical terminology. 

Preferred:

  • Experience in ICD-9 coding. 

Unless certification, licensure or registration is required, an equivalent combination of education and experience which provides proficiency in the areas of responsibility listed in this description may be substituted for the above requirements.
