Job Summary
The primary purpose of the Knowledge Translation Lead is to apply their understanding of knowledge translation (KT) and exchange and science communications, and of occupational and environmental health to support and contribute to research plans and execution of research activities. Under the leadership of the Principal Investigator (PI), the Knowledge Translation Lead will design and execute specific knowledge exchange and mobilization plans and activities that align with CAREX Canada priorities. The Knowledge Translation Lead will design and prepare tailored, evidence-informed knowledge products to disseminate and mobilize CAREX Canada research. Knowledge and demonstrated experience of knowledge exchange and mobilization approaches are important to this position, and the candidate must be able to interpret and synthesize relevant research articles, author publications, and reports for knowledge translation purposes. The Knowledge Translation Lead will engage and collaborate with key stakeholders and partners to identify knowledge user needs and translate this into tangible research activities and outputs. They will develop and execute social media strategies, relevant online content, and deliver external knowledge products to online subscribers through multiple communications channels (i.e. LinkedIn, BlueSky, Mailchimp, among others). The Knowledge Translation Lead will execute the development of CAREX knowledge products, curate the ‘Carcinogens in the News’ email digest, bi-annual e-Bulletin, and work closely with CAREX team members to maintain and develop carcinogen profiles for the CAREX Canada website. Additionally, the incumbent designs and refines knowledge translation and exchange activities to support the mission of CAREX Canada, which is to inspire action towards reducing Canadians’ exposures to carcinogens.


Organizational Status
As a member of the CAREX Canada team, this position reports to the Principal Investigator, and will occasionally oversee work by external vendors, including graphic designers and web developers as needed. The Knowledge Translation Lead is responsible for executing knowledge translation and communication strategies related to the research with all knowledge users, and will engage with external stakeholders and partners.

CAREX Canada (CARcinogen EXposure) is a multi-institution team of researchers and specialists with expertise in epidemiology, exposure assessment, spatial analysis, health policy, and knowledge mobilization. The purpose of CAREX Canada is to provide a body of knowledge about Canadians’ exposures to carcinogens, in order to support organizations in prioritizing exposures and in developing targeted exposure reduction policies and programs.

The University of British Columbia Centre for Disease Control (UBC CDC) is a Senate approved Centre within the Faculty of Medicine that is strategically integrated into the British Columbia Centre for Disease Control (BCCDC) to conduct and coordinate research, education, knowledge translation and policy development in support of provincial, national and international programs for public health control and prevention.



Work Performed


The Knowledge Translation Lead is responsible for the following major areas:

KNOWLEDGE TRANSLATION AND MOBILIZATION:

  • Developing, maintaining, and communicating knowledge translation and mobilization projects and timelines and executing relevant research activities as part of coordinated team efforts;

  • Establishes consistent messaging across all research activities, while tailoring content and style to target audiences and knowledge users;

  • Develops and executes communications strategies and social media plans;

  • Accountable for CAREX Canada’s web presence, which includes maintaining the website, social media accounts, and knowledge products;

  • Reviewing all CAREX Canada online, traditional, internal, and external knowledge products – web content, social media content, knowledge products, reports, academic publications, among other items;

  • Ensuring that key messages are aligned with knowledge translation and mobilization strategies and CAREX Canada goals and objectives;

  • Actively monitoring Google Analytics and soliciting feedback to refine knowledge translation and mobilization strategies;

  • Fostering relationships with partners and internal/external stakeholders to identify collaboration opportunities and to align CAREX program of research priorities with those who will use CAREX evidence and research.

RESEARCH ACTIVITIES:

  • Makes decisions regarding the integration of knowledge translation methodologies into the development and execution of research plans;

  • Ensuring that knowledge translation and mobilization plans are integrated into all research activities;

  • Independently determines analytical approaches and makes professional recommendations that influence research design; accountable for the integrity and rigor of KT-related research outputs;

  • Designs and implements research dissemination protocols and knowledge mobilization frameworks that effectively guide the execution and sharing of research activities and results with relevant partners/stakeholders.

  • Leads KT-related research components, independently determining methodologies, analytical frameworks, and reporting standards; responsible for the quality and validity of KT-focused research outputs, such as the writing and editing of scientific and public reports.

STRATEGIC INVOLVEMENT:

  • Applying the principles and practices of knowledge exchange and mobilization activities to CAREX occupational and environmental health research;

  • Manages the execution of knowledge translation and mobilization plans and strategies as it directly relates to CAREX research.

  • Advising on the development of research approaches that align with CAREX Canada priorities;

  • Advising on research and communications best practices;

  • Presenting CAREX Canada research internally or externally as needed to stakeholders and knowledge users;

  • Leading knowledge translation and website-focused projects. Exercises decision-making over scope, deliverables, and strategic alignment.

PROJECT DEVELOPMENT AND MANAGEMENT SUPPORT:

  • Working closely with the PI to plan, implement, and evaluate knowledge translation research studies/activities (including grant writing as applicable);

  • Responsible for the determination of KT priorities, goals, objectives, approaches, and associated activities;

  • Researching and determining the applicability of new technology and systems related to research project work;

  • Independently provides knowledge translation oversight, as needed for CAREX trainee projects, approving dissemination strategies;

  • Overseeing the work completed by external vendors, including graphic design and web development. Approves vendor deliverables and ensures alignment with research and program objectives.

WRITING/REPORTING:

  • With the Principal Investigator leading and implementing the development of all CAREX Canada knowledge products and communications activities;

  • Reviews and approves final knowledge translation materials;

  • Overseeing project compliance, and contributing to ethics and grant applications;

  • Contributing to policy reports and academic publications.

Consequence of Error/Judgement
The quality and productivity of the research project(s), performance of research staff, and research partnerships will be affected.

This position will be responsible for access, collection, use and disclosure of personal information in accordance with the BC Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (RSBC 1996) and other UBC privacy and security policies. This position requires employees to work under strict confidentiality requirements; internal procedures and policies to protect personal information must be followed and adherence to these requirements will be regularly reviewed by the employer.


Supervision Received
The applicant is expected to function independently but will report to (and work closely with) the Principal Investigator of CAREX Canada. Works with independence and autonomy within scope of work performed. Work is reviewed periodically by the PI to assess the scope of work performed and the achievement of defined goals and key performance indicators.

Supervision Given
The Knowledge Translation Lead will be responsible for managing the execution of the knowledge translation and mobilization activities for CAREX Canada, and is a contact for stakeholders and partners. This position does not have any direct reports.

Minimum Qualifications
Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline. Minimum of three years of related experience, or the equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in health sciences, social sciences, or a relevant discipline is preferred;

  • Demonstrated knowledge product development, and understanding of knowledge translation and mobilization approaches;

  • Demonstrated program development and research methodologies, and project management skills;

  • Experienced in techniques for website development and communications;

  • Experienced with techniques for occupational and environmental exposure data collection and analysis;

  • Ability to navigate, interpret, and analyse research information related to occupational and environmental health;

  • Knowledge to interpret regulations and acts as it pertains to occupational and environmental health;

  • Ability to interpret and prepare scientific and public reports;

  • Strong organizational, interpersonal, and communication (written and verbal) skills, including the ability to communicate and translate findings effectively with audiences with varying levels of technical expertise;

  • Experience in effective stakeholder engagement;

  • Experience in facilitating presentations and meetings;

  • Highly proficient with Microsoft Office applications;

  • Highly proficient with Adobe Creative Cloud applications – InDesign, Illustrator, etc.

  • Experience using Covidence, Qualtrics, and other various web-based applications, SAS, WordPress, basic understanding of HTML is considered an asset.
