Summary of Job
The Kennel Assistant's primary function is to attend to the basic needs of the animal patients in AESC's care and to support all other roles in the hospital setting. This may include basic animal restraint and use of medical equipment.
Qualifications
High School Diploma or equivalent preferred
Prior experience in a veterinary facility preferred
Position type and expected hours of work:
Full or Part-Time
8-12 hours Shifts, up to 40 hours per week
Weekend, evening and holiday shifts required
Overtime may be required
Essential Responsibilities
Attends staff and departmental meetings as required
Completes assigned training modules as required
Observe patients for obvious signs of health concerns and report any findings to senior staff
Appropriately restrain canine and feline patients as directed by senior team members in a safe, humane manner
Clean and disinfect all areas of hospital as often as necessary to maintain high standards of care
Prepare patient meals as directed by senior staff and reports consumption appropriately
Able to walk dogs safely and securely
Accurately identifies and reports quality and quantity of excretions from canine and feline patients
Launders patient bedding and surgical linens, following protocol for infectious or surgical items
Patrol facility regularly to ensure cleanliness (inside and out)
Basic bathing/grooming of patients as necessary
Keeps hospital treatment and patient housing areas stocked; alert purchasing to inventory deficiencies
Uses radiology software and assists with simple radiography using proper technique and PPE.
Identifies soiled or vacant cages and cleans using appropriate cleaning techniques and chemicals. Uses PPE and other required items when cleaning infectious patient cages.
Will cross-train to assist the front desk during peak times or in case of staff shortage.
Additional job duties as assigned.
Working Environment Characteristics
Ability to stand, walk, kneel, crouch, and climb as well as manipulate (lift, carry, and move) up to 50 pounds.
Requires good hand-eye coordination and dexterity.
Use of computer software and keyboarding
Ability to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
Exposure to pet odors and allergens/dander
Occasional exposure to airborne particles from chemicals related to animal care and office equipment.
Moderate noise levels are present
