About the Position
The Juvenile Detention Officer Supervisor is a leader and an important member of the management team that is responsible for the positive engagement of youth in a safe and secure environment. The Juvenile Detention Officer Supervisor must possess great communication skills, both written and verbal, and be comfortable taking the lead and making decisions. Mentoring staff, directing shift activities on one of three shifts, directing the transportation of youth to court or off-site, supervising staff and youth on living units, and ensuring Arizona Juvenile Detention Standards are being met in their daily activities are the main duties of this position. Additionally, administrative tasks such as record keeping for daily tasks, daily shift reports, and semiannual data collection are performed on a regular basis. Once a Juvenile Detention Supervisor has obtained well-rounded experience in directing shifts and living units in detention, they may also be assigned to other program areas as needed.
A Juvenile Detention Officer may supervise Juvenile Detention Officers or Surveillance Officers depending on the assignment.

Position Qualifications

Education:
Associates degree or the completion of 60 semester credit hours from an academically accredited college or university
Experience:
(3) years of experience in probation, juvenile detention, correctional, or adolescent behavioral setting
OR
Combined Education and Experience Qualifications:
An equivalent combination of post-secondary education and job-related experience in probation, juvenile detention, correctional, or an adolescent behavioral setting may substitute on a year-for-year basis
Other Requirements:

Essential Job Tasks
(This is not an all-inclusive list of all job duties that may be required; employees will be required to perform other related duties as assigned.)
Works on one of three shifts in a 24-hour secure detention facility or detention alternatives program as assigned. Will be required to work evenings, overnights, weekends, and holidays.
Supervises staff to ensure each assigned staff member is receiving supervision, mentoring, and constructive feedback.
Provides informal training and serves as a resource for information and guidance.
Interprets and ensures compliance with all policies, procedures, protocols, rules, and regulations.
Mediates staff issues, utilizes progressive discipline appropriately, and documents actions taken in the proper format.
Monitors and completes staff timecards to ensure staff is accurately compensated by the payroll deadline.
Makes and is responsible for ensuring adequate staff coverage for various shifts. May need to work on scheduled days off to ensure operational needs are being met.
Maintains accurate records, reports, and records of activities occurring in the facility.
Ensures detained youth receive necessary services, including meals, education, professional and family visitation, and medical attention.
Responds to crisis situations, and youth grievances and makes decisions to reduce risk to youth and staff.
Ensures youths at risk for suicide are properly identified, supervised, and monitored.
Conducts disciplinary boards with detained youth.
Monitors and reviews contacts and casework with staff working in the Detention Alternative Program.
Serves as a liaison to Probation Officers, Court personnel, and clients regarding all services in the Detention Alternatives Program.
Maintains equipment as departmental directives dictate and takes responsibility for equipment assigned to their area of supervision.
Participates in special projects.
Stays current on all required safety training and certifications.
Safely operates a motor vehicle.

Working Conditions:
Work will be conducted in a secure detention facility.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee may need to communicate clearly, perceive details of objects that are close by, and maintain various physical positions for extended periods, such as sitting, standing, or walking. The job may involve using hands for tasks such as typing, handling objects, or operating tools, as well as reaching with hands and arms. Occasionally, the employee may be required to move or lift objects weighing up to 20 pounds. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform these functions.
Must be willing to work any shifts as assigned that may include nights, weekends, and holidays.

Typically, successful candidates are hired at a salary rate up to the midpoint of the range, based on applicable experience, internal equity, and budgetary allowances.

The Judicial Branch of Arizona in Maricopa County participates in the State Retirement systems ASRS or PSPRS. As such, mandatory membership for all full-time employees includes payroll deducted contributions consistent with each retirement system's requirements. The current contribution rate for ASRS is 12.27% and the current contribution rate for PSPRS is 5.84% and up for the defined contribution plan and 8.82% for the defined benefit plan. Judicial Branch facilities are located throughout Maricopa County. This position may be reassigned to other locations. Assignments will be made based upon the needs of the department.
