Title: Junior Software Developer

Location: Calgary, Canada (2 days onsite per week)

Summary

We are seeking a motivated junior developer with a focus on geospatial systems to support the scripting, development, and automation of spatial data processes. The ideal candidate will have experience working with enterprise geospatial platforms, spatial databases, and data transformation tools, along with a solid foundation in software development. Familiarity with cloud environments is a plus.

General Job Duties

  • Collaborate with the spatial delivery and map services team to understand business requirements and automate workflows through the effective use of technology, systems, and process improvements
  • Review existing processes and develop automation solutions that are scalable, sustainable, and deliver measurable business value
  • Communicate technical concepts clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders
  • Stay current with evolving technologies and apply them to meet business needs
  • Demonstrate strong attention to detail and organizational skills
  • Perform additional duties as required

Specific Job Duties

As part of a project team delivering internal process automation systems, this role will work under the guidance of the Spatial Delivery Team. Responsibilities include scripting and development using modern programming and scripting languages to support:

  • Spatial data maintenance, validation, and distribution
  • Data conversion and coordinate transformation
  • Mapping workflows and general maintenance of internal spatial data structures

An understanding of project management methodologies, particularly iterative and agile approaches, is important for success in this role.

Additional Job Responsibilities

  • Support the automation of reporting to track data access and usage
  • Assist in building efficiencies and automation capabilities related to customer subscriptions and data access
  • Support the management of secure account access requests in alignment with established security guidelines
  • Collaborate with technical teams to troubleshoot and resolve access-related issues
  • Contribute to automation initiatives aimed at improving accuracy and operational efficiency during transitional periods

Required Technical Skills

  • Strong experience with enterprise geospatial platforms and services
  • Proficiency in one or more programming or scripting languages used for geospatial automation
  • Solid understanding of relational database systems and data modeling concepts
  • Experience working with coordinate systems, projections, and spatial reference standards
  • Familiarity with data transformation and spatial data processing tools
  • Working knowledge of server-based and desktop geospatial environments

Optional Technical Skills

  • Experience with cloud-based platforms and services
  • Familiarity with spatial database extensions or native spatial data types
  • Exposure to cloud-based analytical or data warehouse platforms
  • Experience working in Unix/Linux-based environments

Education and Experience Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, a related field, or equivalent practical experience
  • Demonstrated experience working with enterprise geospatial technologies and related programming languages

Organizational Relationships

  • Reports directly to the Development Manager
  • Collaborates with colleagues across multiple teams and organizational levels
