Jr-Level Nuclear Engineer

We are currently seeking a Jr-Level Nuclear Engineer to support our Nuclear Project – Oak Ridge.

Description:

As a Jr‑level Nuclear Engineer, you will support the design, analysis, and evaluation of nuclear systems, components, and facilities for industrial and government clients. This role involves assisting senior engineers and project managers with nuclear engineering calculations, technical evaluations, document preparation, and design support activities related to criticality safety, reactor systems, radiation protection, shielding, thermal‑hydraulics, and nuclear safety.

The successful candidate will collaborate with multidisciplinary design teams to deliver fully coordinated, high‑quality engineering packages, while adhering to Amentum’s engineering procedures, regulatory requirements, and quality standards.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist senior engineers with the analysis and design support of nuclear systems and components
  • Perform basic engineering calculations under direct supervision, such as:
    • Criticality Safety Evaluations
    • Reactor physics or neutronics calculations
    • Radiation dose and shielding evaluations
    • Thermal‑hydraulic calculations
    • Source term calculations (as applicable)
  • Support preparation, review, and revision of engineering documents including:
    • Engineering calculations and technical reports
    • Safety analysis documentation
    • Design drawings and specifications
  • Review and apply applicable codes, standards, and regulations (e.g., NRC regulations, DOE Orders, ASME, ANSI)
  • Assist with configuration management, document control, and design change processes
  • Attend project meetings, design reviews, and training sessions as required
  • Maintain organized project files, calculations, and technical documentation
  • Follow established nuclear safety, quality assurance, and engineering procedures
  • Provide support for system walkdowns, testing, or field activities when required

Basic Qualifications:

  • B.S. in Nuclear Engineering from an ABET‑accredited engineering program
  • 0 to 5 years of experience in nuclear, industrial, or government engineering environments (academic, internship, or co‑op experience acceptable)
  • Ability to work in a team of engineers and designers to complete assigned technical tasks within established budgets and schedules
  • Familiarity with nuclear engineering fundamentals, including reactor theory, radiation, and thermal sciences
  • Exposure to or familiarity with engineering analysis tools and software (e.g., MCNP, SCALE, Excel, or similar)
  • Knowledge of applicable nuclear codes, standards, and regulatory frameworks (e.g., NRC, DOE, ASME)
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail

Preferred Qualifications:

In addition to the Basic Qualifications, the ideal candidate might also have:

  • Engineering‑in‑Training (EIT) certification, or ability to obtain
  • Strong analytical, problem‑solving, and technical writing skills
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook)
  • Familiarity with nuclear safety analysis, shielding analysis, or criticality safety fundamentals
  • Self‑motivated and team‑oriented professional with high personal integrity

Work Environment:

  • Primarily office‑based work in a secure engineering environment
  • Amentum office location is preferred; hybrid or remote work may be available by prior agreement based on role and project requirements
  • Occasional exposure to nuclear or industrial facilities, which may include controlled areas, elevated noise levels, or hazardous materials
  • Site visits may be required

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to sit or stand for extended periods
  • Ability to lift up to 35 lbs occasionally
  • Vision correctable to 20/20
  • Ability to read and use engineering software and technical documentation effectively
  • Appropriate PPE and training will be provided as required

Compliance & Eligibility Requirements:

  • U.S. Citizenship required (no dual citizenship)
  • Valid driver’s license is required
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance
  • Ability to pass pre‑employment background investigation and drug screening
  • Willingness to work overtime or outside normal hours as needed
  • Professional appearance appropriate for a customer‑facing engineering environment
  • Travel required: less than 10%

Essential Functions:
Intermittent sitting, walking, standing, bending, squatting, climbing, kneeling, twisting, and lifting. Lifting requirements limited to 20 lbs. in the form of supplies, drawings, etc. Longest distance carried of 50 feet. Hand manipulation is required for simple grasping, pushing and pulling, and fine manipulation. Right and/or left hands utilized. Occasional need to reach and/or work above the shoulder, for supplies, as well as below the shoulder for same. No foot controls necessary. Must be alert to equipment in the field, there will be occasional travel, may work near construction job site equipment when in the field, occasional need to work near hazardous equipment and machinery, occasional need to walk on uneven ground, exposure to dust, gas or fumes, exposure to noise, extremes in temperature or humidity, and potential work at heights.

U.S. Citizenship is required for access to this project. Valid driver's license is required. Must be able to work in a team atmosphere. Must put forward a professional behavior that enhances productivity and promotes teamwork and cooperation. Grooming and dress must be appropriate for the position and must not impose a safety risk/hazard to the employee or others. Must take and pass a pre-employment drug, background check.

       

Compensation Details:

$70,000 - $90,000

Actual compensation may vary based on factors such as job responsibilities, education, experience, skills, internal equity, market data, applicable collective bargaining agreements, and relevant laws.
