What’s the role?
We’re offering a unique opportunity for an experienced Field Service Engineer to take on a three-year international assignment based in Japan. In this role, you’ll work hands-on with ZEISS semiconductor systems, supporting installation, preventive maintenance, and ongoing technical service.
Fluency in Japanese is required, as you’ll collaborate closely with local teams and customers. Throughout the assignment, you’ll also engage with global experts and travel internationally for training and knowledge exchange.
Upon successful completion of the assignment, the role will transition into a long-term position in the United States, primarily based in the Boise, Idaho area.

Here’s what you’ll do:
Install, maintain, and service ZEISS 3D Tomography Inspection & Metrology and Mask Shop Solutions systems
Perform preventive maintenance, troubleshoot issues, and execute complex repairs
Serve as the primary on-site contact for the customer in Japan, ensuring high-quality service delivery
Coordinate service activities and communicate equipment status with customers and global ZEISS teams
Manage spare parts inventory, including ordering and returns
Document all service activities, reports, and quality updates in a timely manner
Support installation and service needs by collaborating with experts in Germany and the U.S.
Contribute to continuous improvement by identifying solutions and enhancing service processes
Develop and deliver training to local teams in Japan
Act as a key liaison across Japan, Germany, and U.S. teams
Additional Details:
3-year assignment based at a customer site in Japan
Transition to a long-term U.S.-based role (Boise, ID area) upon completion
International travel required for training and collaboration
Do you qualify?
Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Optics, or Mechatronics is preferred, but not required and may be substituted with 5 years of industry experience in the area of optics or mechatronics.
High customer orientation with special engagement and flexibility in regard to service hours.
Ability to read and understand electrical or mechanical engineering documentation and schematics.
Technical experience working in the semiconductor industry.
May periodically be required to travel internationally.
Single-handed work ability, strong hands-on mentality, and the ability to assert oneself.
Experience working within the optics industry is preferred.
Good communication skills written and verbally in English.
Proficient in spoken and written Japanese.
Experienced with Windows operating environments and word processing and/or email applications as well as with databases or CRM systems
