Job Summary: Make an impact while you learn. The Semester of Service Program offers students a volunteer project-based opportunity to support real Federal missions, gaining hands-on experience and valuable career-ready skills. With this project, you'll support a data visualization-based project.

Major Duties:

  • Work Schedule and Flexibilities: Flexible, Hybrid or remote work (based in Washington, DC office if in-person is required) Project Description: The Mission Systems Directorate (MSD) in the Office of the Chief Information Officer (OCIO) is developing multiple sources of system inventory and resource data, including spreadsheets and internal applications. This project will consolidate, clean, and standardize these datasets and translate them into a user-friendly visualization tool (e.g., Power BI dashboard) to support leadership decision-making. The student will: Transform existing system inventory data into a structured, usable dataset Develop an interactive dashboard highlighting system ownership, technology stacks, lifecycle status, contract support, and resource gaps Produce a short insights summary identifying trends, risks, and opportunities Document the dataset and dashboard to support sustainability and future updates This project provides a clearly defined, time-bound opportunity aligned with IT portfolio management and modernization priorities and will result in tangible deliverables usable by leadership.

Qualifications: Applicants will be considered based on their knowledge, skills or abilities related to project needs. Specifically, applicants should have: Coursework or experience in data analysis, data visualization, or information systems Experience with data analysis, data visualization, and document management tools such as Excel, SharePoint, and the Power Platform (e.g., Power BI, Power Apps, and Power Automate) is required Basic understanding of data organization and reporting concepts Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills The government-wide "Semester of Service" Student Volunteer Program, as authorized under 5 U.S.C §31114 and 5 CFR Part 3085, enables Federal agencies to engage students in unpaid, project-based assignments of limited duration. These assignments are designed to align with each agency's strategic priorities, offering participants practical experience within Federal operations while supporting the advancement of targeted initiatives.
